Fresh Grades on the 2023 Draft picks

Post by D-train » Wed Sep 06, 2023 2:22 pm

I know I know, silly to grade them before a single real football game but I am on vacation this week so even more time than usual so here goes:

1. Witherspoon: D
Other than a season ending injury I can't imagine a more inauspicious start. Injured in mini camp, hold out, move from outside corner to nickel, another injury. Yuck.

1b. JSN: A-
Seems this kid is going to be a star. The minus is for the injury but seems he has made a remarkable recovery so all good. And it was a real football injury not one cause be running around on a field.

2a. Hall B
He is listed as second string but seems like an upgrade over Taylor, especially in the run game. Should see lots of action straight away. I bet he gets a sack game 1. Also got bit by the injury bug but doesn't seem serious. So far so good.

2b. Charbonnet: C
Early injury to his shoulder but a quick recovery in and a nice long run in the preseason but now listed as 3rd string on the depth chart. Did we really draft a 3rd string RB in the second round? This is one that is obviously too early to judge. Could easily be RB2 by next week.

4a. Bradford: C
Was supposed to compete with Haynes for the starting job but that never materialized which is slightly disappointing. He was injured much of the time too. What is it with Seahawk rookies and injuries. This head injury suffered in a minor car wreck of all things. The McDowell flashbacks were not pleasant.

4b. Young: C-
You really don't expect 4th rounders to start but given the hole in the middle of the D line with kicking Woods to the curb and Mone being injured I thought there was a good chance he would but again due to a calf injury and possible lack of talent it never materialized to any extent. They even made the surprise move of switching Reed to fill that spot.

5a. Morris: B
Had high hopes for this guy given he put on weight in order to move from the outside to the inside of the D Line and good early reviews but broken record alert, he too got injured and is still dealing with it. Sucks.

5b. Olu: C-
Another broken record alert in terms of a guy that was supposedly going to compete for a starting role but not surprisingly they almost immediately named Brown as the starter citing his experience. Of course Olu was injured much of camp too. An elbow issue this time. Sigh.

6. Reed A-
This guy gets an A for literally being the one draft pick that wasn't injured. Also, seems to be a damn good athlete and a versatile football player. Listed as a 2nd string which is what you would hope for with a 6th rounder.

7. McIntosh C+
More injuries!!! My God it is unreal how many times I had to type that word. Seems like a steal as a 7th rounder and should be a great 3rd down option when heathy.

Summary
We won't know jack until everyone is healthy but right now we have two As, two Bs, 5 Cs and a D so slightly above average atm.

Starters: Zero :(
Made the team: 10/10 :)
Injured at some point: 9/10 :?

I was all prepared to blame Witherspoon's injury on the hold out, and since it was soft tissue? That still could be the case, but it seems more likely that rookies have an adverse reaction to Seahawk uniforms.

We also got an extra 5th rounder when we picked up Kyu Blue Kelley - and even BETTER is we didn't use a draft pick AND get this, the Ravens paid him a big signing bonus, so we get him for nearly free. A+ if he contributes even a little bit. Even if he doesn't it's at least a B- for sticking it to the Ravens haha.

Plus future OROY Jake Bobo.

Really hope that top 5 pick doesn’t come back to haunt us.

OK then, I'll submit my COMPLETELY way too early prediction of how these draft picks will pan out say 3 years from now.
1. Witherspoon: C
This is a tough one, because he's good, but we haven't seen anything yet. I have a feeling he'll be good but not great. Grade gets lower because he's a top 5 pick, not that he'll suck.

1b. JSN: A-
This guy is so talented the only way I see him not working out is injuries.

2a. Hall C
I have absolutely no idea what he can do. I didn't like the pick, still don't know if he's worth a shit. The middle-of-the-road grade is just because I have no clue what to think, he might be an All-Pro, might be LJ Collier.

2b. Charbonnet: A
I truly believe he'll make a 1-2 punch like we've never had.

4a. Bradford: D
I think this is a bust. Ifedi part II, big and strong, loses battles too often to be counted on.

4b. Young: B
I think he'll get lots of playing time, and be pretty solid. Not sure he'll be a star, but if we get a solid starter out of a 4th round pick, that's a win.

5a. Morris: C-
Another bust I expect. Another one I just don't know what to expect.

5b. Olu: A-
I think he'll be the starter NEXT year, and for several years after that.

6. Reed C-
I don't think he'll actually see the field much. One of those guys the coaches like but is never better than actual starters.

7. McIntosh A+
Assuming he comes back healthy and full-speed, I think he breaks out as a star. Might not happen this year, may have to wait on an injury to the big 2, but once he sees the field, I think he will own it.

The only thing more fun than being able to say you were right is to say you were right and somebody else was wrong, so I'm giving you some potential quotes to make fun of later on.

There's really no way of knowing though, since none of these guys have even stepped on a field in an actual NFL game yet. We haven't even seen them practice, outside of a few highlights from Twitter.

Hopefully they all Tariq us.
