Postmortem: Seattle vs. Lambs Second String

Where to begin.
I guess I'll I'll start with relief. I am relieved the game and season are over. For someone as verbose as I tend to be, it's hard to put into words or summarize this team and this season, but it's mostly frustration and exasperation. Anyone living under any delusions of home of home field advantage, Seattle went 7-1 on the road while shitting the bed at home. Another perfect example of this team's utterly bizarre season.
Seattle lined up vs their arch rival's second stringers - neither team with much to gain or lose except pride - and Seattle somehow managed to not completely fuck it up. Yeah, they snatched a victory - but it does not feel celebratory - more like nausea. Jesus - Janeane Garappolo and the has-beens nearly pulled it out and it's hard to smile when you struggled to beat a division rival's second string. Honestly this was a bit embarrassing, in a seemingly endless season of embarrassments and Jekyll & Hyde performances.
Seattle's defense should have dominated. They didn't. Macdonald has to be furious. My God the missed tackles, the endless tosses to the uncovered back in the flat for 10-plus yards every time - they ran that play over and over and over and over. We had NO answer, except for when one of our DB's sniffed it out and immediately whiffed on the tackle. For as much talent as there is on the defense - they got smoked most of the game - I can't look at the stat sheet because if I see Janeane threw for 300 yards with the second unit I am afraid of what I might break starting with this lovely laptop.
The defense flew around - but got burned time after time after time. I am honestly at a loss for words here. Did I mention this was against SECOND FUCKING STRINGERS? The defense showed up, nothing to play for, shrugged and just 'got it over with.' Very, very disappointing. The best unit on the team showed up in name only. Astonishing. They should live stream Monday's tape session with the defense - no way Macdonald isn't pissed. McVey chuckling knowing what he can do. Mac better hold these guys accountable.
But the offense - so many mistakes, so many self inflicted wounds, showed up with some pride and balled out. No, it wasn't pretty a lot of the time, Geno, Tyler, DK, Charbonnet, Mcintosh, and those fucking tight ends came to PLAY today. Hats off to the offense - they showed up where the defense didn't.
I want Grubb retaining his gig. We can hand wring and lament all day the failures - and there were plenty - but it was his first year in the NFL. Every game we saw new and intriguing concepts. Today's hook and lateral was absolutely beautiful - and you know McVey is adding that to his playbook tonight. I want to see what Grubb can do in year two - I don't believe he has reached his ceiling. Seattle will need growth out of him as it's about to get harder on offense. There is going to be turnover starting with Lockett and the QB position seems to be half quick and half quicksand. No one throws a better ball then Geno, but those int's and crushing sacks. I predicted all season long I thought this was a ten-win team and I nailed it - but Geno left games on the field. As bad as they have looked - they probably should have won at least one more game.
Right now the offense is in a purgatory, this constant state of not-quite-there, like a rubix cube missing some pieces, you can quite never put it together - it's baffling and frustrating. The Jekyll and Hyde - as a consumer - it's hard to take and turns me off to the games.
There was a sequence - Seattle driving, third and one - then they jump off side - then on third and five a fucking pass batted down - a wasted throw - and then a punt the punt team perfectly covered - still managed to roll into the endzone. What the literal fuck was that? Head shaking ineptness by a team not devoid of talent. Almost as good as the first quarter punt return - looked perfectly set up for a return - or let it go into the endzone, but no, dude fair catches it at the five - my jaw just dropped. No words for this kind of bumbling and terrible decision making.
Yes, ten wins is huge for Mac, but it feels so empty, so unfulfilled. I think he is going to be good, I think Grubb will prove himself worthy, too. But I can't remember a season so ungratifying, so many EPIC displays of pure shit football. Not plays, and not 'because we lost' but pure shit trash games that warrant immediate refunds. What's worse, that embarrassing win against the Bears, one of the worst games I've ever seen, or beating a division rival's second string? You don't have to win them all, but you can at least look competent, even in a loss.
Seattle's glaring weaknesses. Have to start with all the self inflicted wounds. Brutal penalties. Unnecessary interceptions killing games. Absolute shit return game - new special teams coaching staff needs to be a priority. The QB situation needs to be addressed for real. I love Geno, I hope he hit all his bonuses, but we need a change. I expect him to be back - yes you read that right - but they need to draft, trade, do something, because this is not sustainable. He is the perfect example of the team - highlight throws that wow you - while leading the league in ints. Seattle will go no where with that formula. Third downs - is there anyone that doesn't groan when we hear "third and long" for the opponent - that dreaded feeling they're gonna convert? How about our offense's "third and short" with that same dreaded groan of " how are we gonna fuck this one up?"
Maybe it's just me.
Not a bad season, but definitely an empty version of one, one that coulda, shoulda been more exciting, if we could have just gotten out of our own fucking way. That's probably the most painful kind. A team that started out 3-0 and had to beat the tragic Bears and a second string division rival to get to ten wins. Still not sure on the right words to encapsulate it all - hopefully y'all will enlighten me with some.
Ya'll know by now I think the NFL is shit as a league and the games are getting blatantly worse week-by-week - in a way this feels like the end of an era 'cause I am not sure I am going to watch any more. The product feels tainted, artificial, disingenuous.
Again, maybe it's just me.
It's going to be a very interesting off season - looking forward to some JS magic. It's gonna be a very interest draft.
go hawks...
