UW football top LB tears Achilles, done for season

Post by Sibelius Hindemith » Thu Apr 22, 2021 2:32 pm

Washington outside linebacker Zion Tupuola-Fetui suffered a torn Achilles and will miss six to 10 months, coach Jimmy Lake announced Wednesday.

In Washington's four-game 2020 season, Tupuola-Fetui recorded seven sacks and was named a third-team AP All-American.

He is expected to have surgery to repair the injury later this week and the recovery timeline calls into question his availability to play at all in 2021.

The Huskies also lost linebacker Laiatu Latu to a medical retirement this offseason.

Another lost season awaits us.

I tried to look on the bright side when I heard this. Bowman is back this year, having ZTF redshirt this season means we get him back when Bowman is gone. I guess, if you try real hard, you can see a bit of a silver lining. Otherwise? Horrible news. Poor kid. I am just curious how it has been a week before we found out his sprained ankle was an Achilles tear?

Reminds me of how the Mariners handle injury PR.

Well the good thing is this used to be arguably the deepest position on the team, so the loss doesnt have to be devastating. lot of experience and accomplishment in Bowman, plus 4 and 5 star talent (transfer Martin and Savell Smalls) that has a chance to develop now that none of ZTF, Laiatu Latu and Joe Tryon are there to block them. Also have 3-star Bralen Trice, redshirt sophomore who has drawn comparisons to Tryon after adding some needed bulk, and 3-star Cooper McDonald who was good enough to see the field a bit as a true freshman, ahead of 5-star Smalls.
