CFP seedings?

Post by Sibelius Hindemith » Sun Dec 29, 2024 6:14 pm

I don't understand why #9 Boise St and #12 Arizona St were given byes while #3 Texas and #4 Penn St had to play games in the 1st round. Are the people running the NCAA really this dumb? They take forever to do what everyone has been clamoring for for years and expand the playoffs, then do everything they can to fuck it up by ignoring the ranking system in favor of honoring 2nd and 3rd tier conferences. Unbelievable...

Because they didn't win their conference. And a conference championship HAS TO MEAN SOMETHING.

If they were to just take the 12 best teams, the playoff would be 'basically' limited to the SEC and Big10 (in most years).

As i've said forever, conference championship games are asinine and only exist to generate revenue. Otherwise they are meaningless. Clemson won the ACC championship game and still have a worse record than SMU and are still ranked lower than SMU. All that victory accomplished was to knock Alabama out of the playoff (which i'll acknowledge was pretty sweet). Otherwise, every team in the playoff is ranked in the top 12. My issue is with the seeding. I don't even care if they let some lower ranked teams in because they were best in their conference, just don't give them byes.

I like the championship games, but would like some other requirements to make the playoff.

1- The only way a 3-loss team gets into the playoff is if it wins their conference championship. All other 3-loss teams are eliminated.
2- All 1-loss teams will be in the playoff. I don't care if it's Army or Navy, if they only lost 1 game, that is special.
3- Fuck the strength of schedule because it's based on the 'fact' that ESPN believes the SEC is the toughest conference and when you automatically place 10 SEC teams in the top 25 at the beginning of every season, they will remain 'the toughest conference'.....rankings shouldn't come out until after week 3.

I like it, just curious what would happen in terms off OOC scheduling? The SEC already schedules cream puffs, if having one loss, no matter who you play got you in? The SEC would never play anyone OOC. And I couldn't agree more with the BS about SOS. It is usually based off what people thought at the beginning of the year. Wasn't Michigan in the Top 10 in Pre Season? There is no reason to have a Pre Season poll. It skews things for the rest of the year, IMO.

This format would have worked in the old days, before the Pac 12 folded. If they had handed out byes to the Top 4 Conference Champs the past few years it would have been just fine. The ACC is very down, the Pac 12 is gone, so that fucked things up. But I think when we have made posts like this in years past, with 12 and 16 team formats? The matchups have been pretty cool. Right now? I just don't think you are going to have 4 Champs that deserve a bye.

Last year? Wouldn't it have been Michigan, Washington, Bama Florida State and Clemson? Michigan, UW, Bama and FSU get byes. That would have worked out. It's going to be tough the way the Conferences have realigned to justify four Champs getting byes, but oddly enough? It does make the most sense, right? I mean, as you said...winning your Conference HAS to mean something.

Honestly, the conferences have gotten so large that they need 2 divisions in them..... just like they used to. Then the championship game is the 1st place team in each division.... just like it used to be.

Shit man, the Big 10 has 16 teams, so they only play 8-9 league games a year. Most conferences have 14-16 teams anyway (with the exception of a few), so this would be a very easy thing to do since the template is already there.

-Damn, I loved the way the Pac12 was laid out with the 2 divisions-

I just feel like we have finally got the playoff we have always wanted, but took a huge step backward in other aspects of the season.

I know the Dawgs don't play until tomorrow, but I'm off to the Sun Bowl.

Go Dawgs!!!!
