Jimmy is hijacking my ideas!

Post by Michael K. » Thu Oct 08, 2020 6:30 pm

For years I have commented that more playoff teams would be a ratings coo! I said 8 or 12 teams would be great, but why the heck not at least go to 6? The rankings still matter, maybe even more so because the top 2 get a bye. But fans get what they want, every Conference is represented, and the all mighty NCAA makes more money! Seems like a win win.

Ole Jimmy must have been reading the old Times Forum, because he is now claiming it's his idea! :D
Under the Lake system, the two highest-ranked teams would earn a bye. No. 6 would play No. 3, and No. 5 would face No. 4. The winners would meet the two byes in a Final Four to set up the title game. In a mock-up Lake did of the 2018 season, the Pac-12 champion Huskies played Notre Dame in the first round.
“I think you guys and the college football fans would drool over this schedule,” Lake said. “You take all the subjectivity out of it, all the politics, the East Coast, all of that. Let the champions move on. Let the teams play, and we’ll see who the best team is at the end of year.”
That quote from Jimmy could have been cut and pasted from what I was saying as soon as USC beat us a few years ago and the rumor was we wouldn't get in.

Ha! But if you are going to six then why not 8? Why have byes and lose out on the revenues for two more Q final games?

Because going from two to four took about fifteen years of failure. I was trying to come up with something that the NCAA might actually think about. The NCAA isn't smart enough to go to 8.

Eight would be perfect because you could have the five major conference champions and the three best at-large teams. PERFECT

Yep, it makes sense. Which is why the NCAA will wait another twenty years before going to six!

Yep have the two worst Power 5s play each other and then the three best power 5s play the at large teams.

Like I said, it's too easy and makes too much sense for the NCAA to do it. Think back to how long it took for those dumb asses to admit the Bowls didn't work, just so they could go to a two team playoff? Then they stubbornly refused to admit that was stupid for how long?

A few years ago I broke down what the 8 team playoff would look like...it was the year the Huskies made the Final 4, and the matchups were awesome...but why would we want that? They need controversy...not sure why, but obviously they do. That was one reason I thought that 6 would work. You would still have some debate over who deserved the byes and what at larges got screwed by not getting in.

Based on BCS rankings so that it still serves a purpose. HOW has this not happened?

Last year we would have had this:
LSU vs Wisconsin
Ohio State vs Baylor
Clemson vs Georgia
Oklahoma vs Oregon

That's a pretty attractive slate of opening round games. Too bad the stuffy old men who run things wouldn't do it just because they're not "controlling" it.

Going out on a limb here, but I am betting every year they took 5 Conference Champs and added 3 at large teams and played a tourney? There would be awesome matchups. The only people that lose by them not doing that are the fans and the teams...but, as I have said and they have displayed over and over again? They don't care.

After the debacle that was the way they handled COVID? I was really hoping the Power 5 Conferences would look to break away on their own. Not kidding, I had heard several rumors about this prior to games being played. The Conferences were basically doing everything on their own anyway. Why not form a partnership with just those five?
