What If

Post by Donn Beach » Tue Aug 12, 2025 7:05 am

So chatting with bpj about Julio's baseball contract, got me thinking about what if's. I don't ponder that kind of stuff too much but there's one that really kind of fascinates me, the 2000 presidential election. We have tight elections these days but that one was nuts, the hanging chads? Deciding that election was crazy, I don't remember all the details, but what if Gore wins? That certainly was quite possible. So what if Gore is president for 911? I'm not saying necessarily better or worse but man, it hard to argue isn't it things would be a lot different. Are we invading Afghanistan? Perhaps, but I can't see us invading Iraq, that for me was Bush's persona vendetta. That pair of events, that combination of that wild election and that attack, what's the alternate reality?

If Gore became President......

9/11 still happens and the number of foreign terrorist attacks on home soil and against us in other countries would have gone up exponentially. They already pulled off the Khober Towers bombing, Kenya and Tanzania Embassy bombings and USS Cole bombings under Clinton and felt empowered to do whatever they wanted, which was a precursor to 9/11. Clinton did NOTHING to stop or strike fear into anyone, and Gore would have been even worse.

Gore would have broke the bank on the Green New Deal scam, and would have raised taxes significantly to pay for those programs. He would have completely wrecked the fossil fuel industry even more than the most recent President did.

Gore would have been a complete disaster as a President. Yes, GW Bush gets a lot of criticism for Iraq and the Middle East, but one thing he did do was kill a lot of terrorist leaders and put the U.S. on the 'Don't Fuck with us' map once again.

Would Gore have been given the same intel on Iraq that Bush was? If so, it's hard to imagine he wouldn't have taken some action. He probably would have been a one-termer and lost to Bush in 2004. Then in 2008 assuming the subprime mortgage crisis still happens Bush loses his re-election bid to Obama or someone else.

I didn't think of it as being intel driven as much as policy driven. It was a continuation of his fathers war. That being said A Gore administration could have been as interested in regime change as Bush's

I couldn't even begin to speculate what the alternate reality would be if Gore had won the election. It is an interesting historical question though, like what if Abraham Lincoln didn't run against three opponents who split the opposing vote in 1860, or if in 1933 Lillian Cross hadn't grabbed Giuseppe Zangara's arm as he tried to shoot FDR, what if Lee Harvey Oswald had missed, what if Richard Nixon had kept his big mouth shut...
