Mass shooting in British Columbia

Whenever a mass shooting happens, the liberals go bonkers, screaming "IT'S AN EPIDEMIC OF MASS SHOOTINGS AND THEY'RE HAPPENING ALL THE TIME", not realizing that mass shootings actually make up a teeny-tiny percentage of murders in America. Someone kills five people in a single shooting and people in Baltimore shrug and say "Yeah, we got that here last weekend, just took two shootings to do it".

And then this trans person in British Columbia goes on a rampage and now the conservatives go bonkers, screaming "IT'S AN EPIDEMIC OF TRANS VIOLENCE" and I'm thinking wait...isn't this like maybe the second or third time this has ever even happened?

What is it with people, left and right, and their idiotic obsession with hyperbole? I conversed with some people on social media and it's amazing how many people believe that mass murder is a frequent thing among trans people, and if you tell them to Google "Mass shootings in the United States" to see how many are trans-related, they resort to name-calling, just like liberals do when you tell them the exact miniscule percentage of murders in the US that are mass shooting-related or the exact miniscule percentage of murders in the US that are committed with AR-15s.

That may be although the only mass shootings committed by biological females that i can recall in the past 10 years involved trans males (i.e. women on testosterone).

Have they found a way to blame it on Trump yet? Or how about "toxic masculinity"? That's a fun scapegoat! Oh, I know, how about climate change made them do it? The guns made them do it? They just needed a 'mental health' day? Anything but personal accountability, right?

The sad part is that somehow, somewhere along the way, we have collectively failed the human race.

I have a co-worker who recently regaled me with a story about his trans cousin (female (for now), lives in her parent's basement, weighs 300 pounds and is married to another female). Neither of them ever leave the house, simply gaming all day. The parents pay for everything, buy the groceries, etc.

News flash... as a parent, you're doing it wrong. Enabling is not the solution. You are literally failing your offspring.

It's sad, pathetic and more common than anyone wants to admit.

I think you are absolutely correct. People on both sides have things they focus on and ignore facts and numbers.

I will say three things: One of that it's pretty much human nature to notice the vivid things, the shiny objects so to speak. "10 people killed at the mall" catches your attention more than "10 people killed in unrelated incidents around the state."

Second is that it's pretty much human nature to notice and to agree with things that reinforce one's prior positions. If I think that AR-15s should be banned, I'm more likely to notice when an AR-15 has been used in a murder. If I think that trans people are disproportionately violent, I'm more likely to notice trans violence. (And of course, both social media and other media feed the outrage cycle by highlighting these incidents.)

Third, mass shootings are often different in that many of the victims are unrelated to the killer, so it's random violence. Statistics say (I'm pretty sure this is correct, but I just felt like writing "statistics say") that most murder victims knew their killer. But I sense that the general public concern with violent crime is with the random, unknown assailant. Mass shootings have that element. So we fear and blame the guns, we fear and blame the trans people, the leftists, etc.

Definitely the sensationalism of a mass shooting is the biggest attention-getter and is what brings the politicians out of the woodwork with their knee-jerk reactions: 'BAN AR-15s!!!" Are these people aware that the 2007 Virginia Tech mass murderer killed 32 people using handguns? And are they also aware that most weeks more people than that are murdered in the ghettos of Baltimore, Philly, Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, etc.?

When I was on X I'd go onto David Hogg's feed and whenever a mass shooting took place he'd talk the same blather about banning AR-15s. I'd ask him, "So if a mass murderer uses handguns and kills 10 people as opposed to, say, 20 he might have killed with an AR-15, would that really make you feel better?" Of course he wouldn't answer as pundits only reply to stupid people who are easy to take advantage of.

Mass shootings... homelessness ... and a dozen other things to incite people and distract them at the same time. These are the things that allow politicians to scream for more funding and push a narrative.

And solve nothing.
