I think that Biden said that just because SOME democrats want to "defund the police" does not mean that the majority of democrats want to defund the police. And that is analogous to: just because SOME republican believe there is a blood quaffing cabal of the rich and powerful does not mean that a majority of republicans believe that.

I consider *abolishing* the police to be the lunatic fringe. I support more funding for the police. But I understand the sentiments that [1] the police currently are responsible for some things that would possibly be better served by people with different training, and [2] there is insufficient funding for a lot of needs. People who feel this way fall under the umbrella of "defund the police," as best I can tell. They are not saying "abolish the police".

So who do you call for domestic disputes? Social workers? Statistics show that those responding to domestic disputes are more likely to be in danger than any other call. Drug busts? If I was a social worker, I'd want the police there as well. But then are you willing to pay for TWO organizations responding to police calls.

Look, we ask the police to be far more than they are. Perhaps we need to define their role more narrowly as well as teach the general population to respond to the police in a respectful manner. You don't mess with a policeman. They carry guns.

Good questions. If there is a threat of violence it seems that is a reason for an armed response. But yes, we sure do ask a lot of police. I have a lot of respect for them. And not just because they have guns.
