2021 new target date competition window.

Even as good looking as Santana is, I just can't get myself to fall in love with that 0.3 WAR or even that .781 OPS.

Gotta love player comparisons that ignore age. Bishop just reached AAA for the first time at age 25. Santana made it to AAA at age 21 and had an .858 OPS his first year followed by a .999 OPS in AAA at age 22 before he got called up . Compare apples to Apples When Bishop was 21 he put up a .760 OPS in Everett. and at 22 he put up a combined .665 OPS between Bakersfield and Clinton.

How about when they were both 25? Not too concerned what Santana did when Obama wasn't even half way through his second term.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2019 3:18 pmGotta love player comparisons that ignore age. Its about track record and speaks to overall talent level. There is a big difference between being 25 and finally getting your first shot a AAA and being 25 and being demoted back to AAA after you have already been there a bunch. Not only is there the fact that one guy is probably a whole lot more excited and amped up to be there and there is also the fact the the guy who has been sent down has probably been given specific tasks of things that he needs to work on and is not as concerned with overall results. Not to mention the scouting reports teams have on a guy like Santana are way better than a guy who has spent the last 4 years in the low minors.

The point wasn't to prove that Bishop was as good a hitter as Santana, it was to show that the perceived disparity in hitting ability might not be as significant as one might think especially compared to the massive Grand Canyon gap in defensive ability.

for me Vogelbach and Santana are one dimensional players and the problem with players like that is if that one dimension fails then you are left with no value at all, which i might point out is the situation with both of them the second half of the season. They might be fun players on a team that could lose a hundred games or even one that might try for the playoffs but I do not view them as pieces for a championship run. If they really are trying to put together a roster to compete with the Astros then they need to do better than that

I think there is only room for one of them moving forward. Neither one should be playing defense and we only need one DH.

Nor should you, on his contract he's easily replaceable.
The difference is he actually has upside.
Age-wise he's just hitting his prime. He's no sure thing- below average this year even given how long they left him in LF- but he's still one of our best 3 overall outfielders right now which is all that matters. At times his .900+ OPS could carry the team. Unlike the guys behind him on the depth chart.
Putting him at DH sells the DH position short, and does nothing for his trade value when he will be fine as a RF, it just doesn't make sense.
His upside buys him another year in RF in my opinion. It will be a sink or swim year for him. This year wasn't, and even if it was, he'd still be considered a swimmer given his production. Definitely needs to get back to driving the ball to right field though.
Re: 2021 new target date competition window.
Well if this happens we might see both Santana and Bishop in the OF next season........
While Mariners right fielder Mitch Haniger was deemed close to untouchable in trade talks last offseason, some around the game expect him to be available in the coming offseason, tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. That’s hardly a firm indication that Seattle will push to move Haniger when his value has diminished, but the 28-year-old (29 in December) would make an interesting addition to the winter trade market should the Mariners entertain offers on him. Haniger has been out for more than two months due a to a ruptured testicle that required surgical repair, and he wasn’t anywhere near his best when healthy, hitting .220/.314/.463 with 15 home runs in 283 trips to the plate. But he logged a combined .284/.361/.492 batting line (134 OPS+) in 2016-17 with the Mariners and can still be controlled through the 2022 season. Add in quality defensive marks in right field plus the ability to man center field when needed, and it’s easy to see why Haniger would hold appeal throughout the league even on the heels of a down campaign. Broadly speaking, Seattle GM Jerry Dipoto is as open-minded about trades as any baseball ops leader in the game, so it stands to reason that Haniger and others will be oft-cited trade candidates this winter, whether a deal comes to fruition or not.
