Does Clowney put the Hawks into top 5? poll

Post by Hanjag » Sat Aug 31, 2019 10:44 pm

I know I do not have all the information yet on injuries, and 53 man roster, but what kind of impact does getting Clowney have on expectations?

NFL preseason rankings:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300000 ... s-lead-way

In the NFC they had the Hawks #10 pre-Clowney.
NFC West rivals Rams #2, Saints #3, Eagles 6, Bears 7, Cowboys 8.

Give or take I would probably agree. Cowboys without Eliott would fall beneath.
The Hawks now have a top-notch front 7 Clowney, Reed after 6 games, Ford, Ansah, Wagner, KJ, Kendricks,( LJ Collier, Barton, BBK) are good depth. LJ is injured with the ankle. 6 games out for Reed is replaced by Meder, or Q. Jefferson.

The back end has some good players but they are not the LOB. I like Flowers and Griffin, The safeties are all pretty good, I don't know who the Nickle is but should be solid.

The offense has a good line, deep at running back, with Wilson directing.

I thought the WR core was best maybe ever but cutting Brown and Moore hurt has a good top 3 (DK, T Lock, and Ursua) and then????

i look for more from the TEs this year as well - Dissly was off to a hot start before injury last year. Dickson can also catch when healthy, and Vannett, well ok, not bad for 3rd string i guess. would not be surprised to see us sign another wideout, especially if Jazz gets snatched up by a poacher.

Now here is some epic trivia.

When Jadeveon Clowney plays his first snap of the regular season, he will be the first No. 1 overall pick to ever play in a regular season game for the #Seahawks

Really, that's amazing. We've had a couple or own #2 overall picks play, Steve Niehaus (should have been Tony Dorsett) and Rick Mirer. Man, compare those guys to the Sonics' #2 overall picks, Gary Payton and Kevin Durant.

And yes, I think Clowney just by himself pushes the Hawks to that next level.

Unless he can play in the secondary, the D is still average. His pass rush will help cover up the blemishes that is the Hawks secondary, but they're still going to get lit up.

I suspect that the secondary will have some issues at the beginning of the year, but will get better as the season progresses. It could be a strength if Blair and Amadi play well.

Griffin will be at least as good as he was his rookie year and Flowers will be better than his excellent rookies season. Get lit up?

Vegas thinks he is worth 2.5 points a game. Open was Hawks -7 and now we are -9.5 vs. Bengals.
