Passed on him because Jerry didn't want a DH only type. Instead ended up with Winker in LF and Toro, Torrens KLew at DH.

Columnist (and former MLB exec) Jim Bowden at The Athletic lists the Mariners as the best fit for shortstop Xander Bogaerts:

Subscription required.

An excerpt:
Bogaerts would be a terrific fit, on and off the field, due to his strong veteran presence and leadership skills. The Mariners could move J.P. Crawford to second base to make room for him, or move Suárez to DH and play Bogaerts at third base if he’s willing to change positions.
Bowden projects Bogaerts with a seven-year, $196 million contract.

Love the idea, but it will only work if JP moves his ass to 2B. Really - here's an article about Xander being moved to 2B recently with the Red Sox:

https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/red-so ... rtstop-man

"Bro. I'm a shortstop, man. That's where I've played my whole career. Obviously it's a position I take a lot of pride in. If you look at my numbers, they've been pretty good for these years. I like being there. That's it."

I'm not sure why the team would use the capital to acquire Bogaerts just to make the net benefit be filling the DH position with Suarez when there are good bats available that are actually DH's for $15M and you could keep your extra $150M that you're not paying Bogaerts.

Other than that, Bogaerts would obviously be an upgrade if they use him up the middle.

RRS believes that demoting JP to 2B will have a negative effect on the player and clubhouse because he's a "leader." Makes the injury excuse for JP Crawford when it comes to defense, says his struggles defensively seeped into his offense. Says JP should protect his value and say "no" to the positional change. Says that changing positions "never ends well and will have consequences." - Bleh. He referred to Jose Lopez having to move from 2B to 3B as a "demotion" that hurt Lopez... how is moving Lopez to 3rd a demotion lol? Called Lopez a "different dude" when he moved. So what?

He believes that Jesse Winker will work this off season to get his ass in gear due to his '22. He referred to Winker as a "class clown" that is only tolerable when he's performing. He said Winker, after making the All Star team in '21, got "comfortable," which is "the worst thing that can happen to an athlete." He believes Winker will spend the off season gaining strength and will return to form w. thump.

What about Jose Abreu? He had a great season last year, he's a FA 1B/DH, and he's been pretty consistent most of his career. I mean since we are tossing out the idea of a DH (which apparently JD doesn't like). He will be 34 or 35, so it wouldn't be a long contract. But the Boomstick was still swinging it into his early 40's.

He'll be 36 at the start of next year.

And that could be a "36." He's from Cuba... could very well be 38-40. He looks the part.

Lost lots of power despite maintaining quality contact. He and JD Martinez are really no different there.
