Give me a break with put the breaks on spending. You really think that's how they work their budgets? You think it's like taking the check book away from your wife?

Do you have any great insight into how the budget process works internally with the Mariners? I've posted on this question a number of times in the last year and a half or so. I think it's critical to how they operate and it's the same process, more or less, that has been in place for the last two decades. It reflects the corporate background and conservative nature of the current ownership group. Now, maybe they'll prove me wrong. Maybe laying low this offseason is a stroke of strategic genius by the front office, but I'm really wondering.

The insight on this ownership group has been the same since the 90s.....put a competitive product on the field for as little money as possible to get fans to buy tickets

None at all. I do understand they are a franchise valued at a billion and a half dollars that has the reputation of being run efficiently. I believe that includes budgets worked out well in advance. We may not like the budgets but that doesn't mean they do not exist. I would use as an example, the Japanese pitcher we signed again after he failed his Dodger physical. Remember dipoto had to get special permission to go over budget to accomplish that. I do not believe the budgeting is handled by having to call dipoto and telling him to quit spending

You love your straw men, don't you? I'm not saying it was a call out of the blue taking his money away but I do think there was a policy shift at some point because all of a sudden he started talking about future obligations in a way he never had before.

They don't have sudden policy shifts. The thing is working fine as far as they are concerned. They made the playoffs, they were named the organisation of the year. They don't see the issues that are seen here

Are you guys trying to be intentionally obtuse or what???

The huge story out of the post season presser is that they were going to be in on the FA SSs now they aren't in on any decent FAs at all.

“Our great preference would be we could land a shortstop that would like to go play second base, but we are not going to close the door to anything in that regard,” he said. “J.P. is our shortstop, he’s an emotional leader for us. We feel he does a very good job in anything we ask him to do. He was banged up at the end of the season as well, dealing with a knee issue of his own. He has a way of elevating the emotion of our team in a way that very few in our clubhouse have the ability to do. He will line up for us opening day at shortstop and our goal is to put someone around him. If we do find someone who plays shortstop, that person could very likely move to second base. That’s a discussion for then and not now. J.P. is our shortstop, we signed him to play shortstop and that’s what we intend to have him do.”
