I get what you're saying, and he's certainly an upgrade over Kelenic. But despite the 27 homeruns his offensive value to his team (106 wRC+) was even less than what Winker (109 wRC+) brought the Mariners because his AVG and OBP were a problem- although he'd fit in well with what the Mariners have been- and his splits were bad enough that we'd still need a RH bat to platoon with him, an .801 OPS against RHP but a .553 OPS against lefties.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Sat Dec 10, 2022 3:04 pmVarsho had 27 dingers in a year in which offense was subdued across the entire league and was good for 4.9 bWAR and 4.6 fWAR. Fangraphs rates him at 7.7 Off and 16.4 Def. If Arizona is willing to move him, then you jump at the chance. This is one of the better outfielders in the league, and he bats left-handed.bpj wrote: ↑Sat Dec 10, 2022 10:35 amVarsho had a 106 wRC+ in 2022.
Winker had a 109 wRC+.
JP Crawford had a 104.
Bryan Reynolds has a career .842 OPS and 126 wRC+.
Vasho has a career .738 OPS and 101 wRC+.
They're not really in the same league offensively.
Varsho's value comes from his defense and versatility.
For a team that needs offense he's a poor fit imo.
While I kind of doubt Arizona would move the player, it's worth asking what they need and if there could be a match.
For comparison Taylor Trammell had a .775 OPS against RHP with T-Mobile as his home park.
Just don't think there's the upside there that 27 homeruns looks like on paper. And I even love homeruns more than the next guy.
He is like an upgraded version of Kelenic, so if the plan was to just push our LH hitting OF's to AAA, I'm all for it. He's just not upgraded enough to be an impact bat I was hoping they would get. Which is sad because it shows how much Kelenic would need to improve to actually be a 120+ wRC+ player like Mitch Haniger was.
