Another thing about Pollock is that I can't imagine they think he's a better option than Wil Myers, so what they're looking for is the cheapest possible right-handed bat to throw out there vs. lefties, and that just sucks. If they sign him, it'll be for like $3 million when the market for Myers is probably $8 million or more.

And I'll assume Conforto is out at this point as well. I have to guess that one year of Conforto would be sort of in the same range as Cody Bellinger's deal with the Cubs, which is one-year at $17.5 million.

Yep. This sounds right.

They can't spend too much on an outfielder, after all. Not when Kelenic is left handed so he's slated to get 450 at bats against right handed pitchers, and whoever they're after is just a platoon against lefties.

Which is just weird after seeing what Haggerty brought in that role last year. Especially compared to Kelenic in the starting role. But, whatever, I guess...

I know I've said this before and people are tired of hearing it, but this is the sort of thing that really makes me wonder about the Mariners and their internal finance process. I don't believe Mariners GMs have control of their own budgets, probably not since Pat Gillick. I think there's a budget of some kind, but I don't think the GM has that much say in how much money he gets or in how its spent. There have been too many years when just a little more money would have made all the difference. So many lost seasons.

Well yeah there is a budget, it's what I pointed out when they re-signed Hisashi Iwakuma. Dipoto had to go to the owners to add $10 mil to it.
. We said from the start that Kuma was a priority for us," Dipoto said in a statement. "Obviously, the developments from the last few days allowed us to get back in the game. It's a credit to our ownership -- to Howard Lincoln, to Kevin Mather, to our entire ownership group -- that we were able to get aggressive and find a way to bring Kuma back to the Mariners. We're all thrilled. This is a big move for us.

And here's the Passan tweet, not that it matters:
Boras was smart to get Correa to sign the one year deal last year. The old agent got a cut of that one, but Boras gets a healthy portion of $350 million.
