Yeah, but correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t he about out of options? I mean you can’t keep bouncing his ass back to the minors to “figure it out” indefinitely. Once he’s out of options, you’ve pretty much got to play him or trade him, right?
I know you’re joking a bit here, but if they give him 300 PAs, and we’re at the trade deadline in July and he’s batting .180 again, what do you honestly do with him?
Kelenic's trade value is so low now that if he's batting .180 again in July his trade value won't be significantly lower. The Mariners' hand will be forced when Kelenic runs out of options (which could be as early as next offseason).
Now I think they'd have to burn his option just to get him to AAA next season.
Idiots.

Jarred Kelenic has one minor league option remaining.

Because they painted themselves into a corner on having to burn his last option because they recalled him at the end of last year (which is what they shouldn't have done), so now going into next season they'd have to option him down again and burn his flash option.
That's the only reason. If they had added the LF'er we all knew they needed last year, and the year before, and now again this season, they wouldn't have had to bring him up before he was ready and burn his options at all.

Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League Thread
The option had already been burnt when they sent him down in May. It didn't cost them again to bring him up

Correct.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun Jan 01, 2023 5:42 amThe option had already been burnt when they sent him down in May. It didn't cost them again to bring him up
And the Mariners kept Jarred Kelenic down long enough that he still has not accumulated a full year of MLB service (Kelenic remains under team control for six seasons).

However, since he was recalled at the end of last season and not optioned back down, he would now need to be optioned down in 2023, which burns the final option.
Had they kept him down at the end of last season they could start him in AAA (and keep him there all of 2023) without burning an option until they recalled him again.
Painted themselves into a corner by ending the season with him on the MLB roster.

A player on the 40-man roster who does not open the season on the 26-man roster (or the injured list) is optioned to the minors. The player loses an option if he spends at least 20 days in the minors.bpj wrote: ↑Sun Jan 01, 2023 6:13 amI know one had been burnt last year.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun Jan 01, 2023 5:42 amThe option had already been burnt when they sent him down in May. Unless he is removed from the 40-man roster Jarred Kelenic should lose his final option in 2023 if he spends at least 20 days in the minors at any point in the season. His status on the 26-man roster at the end of the 2022 season should not impact his 2023 option status.
Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League Thread
Got it, thank you. Would have been a great reason to get a stopgap OF'er before they added Kelenic to the 40 man roster in 2021 and started wasting options before he was ready.harmony wrote: ↑Sun Jan 01, 2023 7:01 amA player on the 40-man roster who does not open the season on the 26-man roster (or the injured list) is optioned to the minors. Unfortunately they "weren't ready" to go for it yet, and for whatever reason they just had to see what Kelenic had at age 21 before he had even proven that he was better than his peers by outperforming them.
And we see the results playing out. Even Eddie Effin Rosario would have been an upgrade the last couple years, including pushing us into the playoffs in 2021. And would it have hurt Kelenic to have to wait a bit longer? Turns out, not at all.
He didn't have to struggle like that. They threw him to the wolves without a safety net.
He should just now be starting his MLB time. Such a shame how they handled him.
Looks like there's no pausing that clock now that they started it. What a waste.
I guess I shouldn't cry over spilt milk, but the team would have been better off, and Kelenic would have been better off. And the move to add a MLB OF'er seemed obvious at the time. So it's hard not to.
