I don't see the Hawks using the franchise tag. Too expensive against the cap. Is Geno worth $30 million a year? Nope. So, perhaps offer him a 2 or 3 year deal for $12 million a year. There is always room to go up on that, but I wouldn't go above $15 million per year.
It will be interesting. But I just don't see how you keep Smith at $15 million per year. Not in the current market.

Agreed. Too many teams need a QB to simply not pay a guy more than that. Especially a guy who was -

1st in the NFL in Completion percentage at just at tick under 70%
4th in TDs
5th in Passer Rating
8th in Passing yards
9th in Yards per attempt
And while he did throw 10 INTs, there were 9 guys that threw more. Included in those 9 are Dak, Josh Allen, Kirk Cousins, Carr, Mahomes, Burrow and Rodgers.

Oh, and he rushed for 366 yards, at 5.4 per carry and another TD. Pretty darn good year to just say "give the man 15 million". I'm not saying break the bank, but I will be willing to say he is probably not playing next year for 15 million.

NFL's highest-paid quarterbacks
Rank Player AAV
1 Aaron Rodgers $50.3 million
2 Russell Wilson $49 million
3 Kyler Murray $46.1 million
4 Deshaun Watson $46 million
5 Patrick Mahomes $45 million
6 Josh Allen $43 million
7 Derek Carr $40.5 million
T-8 Dak Prescott $40 milllion
T-8 Matthew Stafford $40 million
10 Kirk Cousins $35 million

I don't think a guy puts up the kind of number Geno did and then works for $20 million less than the 10th highest paid QB.

Nice breakdown Michael! Maybe Pete and John swings a deal that includes heafty roster bonuses to reduce risk exposure. That's one way to look at a high cost deal. I was looking at passing stats alone the other day and Goff's stats were similar to Geno's, and Goff's base is $20M + $5M roster bonus + $5M in restucture for a $30M cap hit in 2023. I bet Geno's deal will look similar.

Has Goff ever been top 10 in any passing category? Geno is getting more than that take it to the bank.

Yards, TDs, Rating. Only 7 Ints. Has a stronger history than Geno.

And what's wrong with the above? Answer: Plenty. For the most part, these GMs and execs suck at their jobs. The money DEN ponied up for Wilson? Incompetence. Kyler Murray? More incompetence. Signing Watson to a boatload of money? Sheer incompetence. GB should have let Rodgers walk. Derek Carr? Overpaid. Don't even get me started on Cousins.

I'm just a guy who watches games and is a fan of football, but even I can see the glorious ineptitude on display. It boggles my mind. First off, to allow (even encourage) salaries to escalate like this is complete lunacy, but the icing on the cake has to be the signing of unproven players (Murray) of questionable character (Watson).

Now we all know that a QB's value isn't based solely on SB wins. A QB needs to be a game changer, a guy who can elevate his game and instill confidence in his teammates. Murray, Wilson, Watson, Carr and Cousins don't do that. Las Vegas has actually given up on Carr.

And if we are talking about championships, then consider this... Rodgers (1 title, 12 years ago). Wilson (1 title, 10 years ago on a team with a dominant D). Stafford (1 title). Mahomes (1 title, and perhaps more to come). In other words, 6 of the guys on the list haven't won a Super Bowl, and likely never will.

Some will say that the market dictates the salaries. Sure. And yes, you need a guy who can run your offense, but this is madness.

GB -missed the playoffs
LAR - missed the playoffs
CLE - missed the playoffs
ARI - missed the playoffs
DEN - missed the playoffs
LVR - missed the playoffs

I think most of us can agree that DAL and MIN aren't going anywhere in the postseason. And a team that actually has a legitimate shot at winning it all is playing with a 3rd string QB.

Probably not.
I've been hearing the stats all year and for a minute I was really buying in, but the Seahawks did go on a streak where they lost
5 out of 6 games. Was that all on Geno? hell no, but that's kinda the point. This team needs better players, especially on defense.
The 49ers are supposed to mop the floor with us with the last player selected in the draft at QB. Let that sink in a minute before
you feel like the Seahawks must re-sign Geno.

As I've been saying, I'm not sure Pete and JS are going to be willing to invest in Geno when they just climbed out of that situation
and came out smelling better than they did before. But maybe they won't look at it like that. Pete and JS have shown a willingness
to do what I'm going to call "reward contract" veteran players that bought in to the PC system. Has Geno attained that status yet?
Is 25-30 million really a crippling amount even if people like me don't like it? It's not my money.

After listening to all the talk and seeing some numbers - If the Seahawks do re-sign Geno, this is my prediction.
3 years - 75 million - 40 million guaranteed.

I agree with both of you. My point is more that someone IS going to pay for Geno, not necessarily that they should. Again, I am glad it's not my call. It could be a bad decision both ways. Maybe Geno all of a sudden gets it and has many good seasons, or maybe he had a great stretch for a bit this year, but what we saw late is what he is?

Personally? His finish to the season concerns me. Beating the Rams twice and Jets but losing five other games is not instilling confidence in me that he is the guy.

Ultimately, I don't have confidence in Geno either, but if the rest of the team takes a giant step forward in 2023, he might be good enough.
Again, look at that the 49ers. Look at the Eagles.
Geno is going to have a very difficult time looking like a $30 million QB on Saturday. I hope he pulls it off though.
Maybe I've been too hard on him.

That's what I keep saying. This will be super interesting because for the first time in his life, Geno is in a massive bargaining position, and he could want to take full advantage of it. Can't blame him if he does. On the flip side, he might be smart enough to realize his best chance at success is in Seattle and take less. I highly doubt PC/JS want to pay top-10 salary for a QB, but who knows? Personally, I don't think it's the smart move to pay too much, but it IS a smart move to try to keep him at a non-team-crippling number.

He hasn't been BAD, though, just not as good as the first 9 games. This last game was his worst, but even that wasn't nearly as bad as some of the games Russ put up. I think it may have been you that made the point earlier that other teams may have figured him out, like playing 2-deep safeties against Russ, but less obvious. Probably partially true, but I think the big problem is losing Dissley, Goodwin and to a lesser degree Eskridge. There have been a LOT of plays where Geno looked bad because somebody ran the wrong route, and that happens a lot less when all his weapons are available. He is at his best when he's spreading the ball around, taking advantage of the weak parts of the defense... it's a lot harder when you have DK, Lockett, and... Cade Johnson and Tyler Mabry.
