I'm not sure it's one or the other. A QB is one dude. A defense is 11 dudes. Unless you mean what to do with the 5 pick.
I'd be surprised if Pete and JS draft a QB at 5. I would like to see this be a defense heavy draft for the Seahawks.
And paying Geno doesn't stop you from drafting defense.

True, but draftees are a gamble. I'd rather go after two proven FA DL types than pay Geno the money he's likely to demand. Then draft for defense as well.

FAs are a gamble, too. WAY more expensive ones, and older. Remember Albert Haynsesworth, Nnamdi Asamugha, DeMarco Murray, etc??

Free agency should be very interesting this year. I'd be fine letting Geno walk if that's what Pete and JS decide.

FAs are a gamble, too. WAY more expensive ones, and older. Remember Albert Haynsesworth, Nnamdi Asamugha, DeMarco Murray, etc??

The only FA I'd want is Payne or Hargrave. The rest you can draft.

Not too many Geno supporters out here. In his early time here, wasn't RW a "game manager?" And in fact, If we can get one FA starter on the D-Line and one on the O-Line, I'd be good with that. Then augment both in the draft unless one of the top two QB's fall to us. I just can't see paying Geno what he'll want (somebody will) when we have proof that a QB needs a good supporting cast around him.

100% on all of that. Load up on defense and sprinkle in a stud interior O-lineman or two. This team is strong on the perimeter and weak up the middle on both sides of the ball. DT, MLB, C, OG are the biggest needs (+QB, which I assume will be Geno). Depth everywhere else.

According to Shefter? We are signing Geno, so I would say there is very little chance we are using one of our first three picks on a QB. Maybe that second pick in the 2nd round, but I would think even later.

I wonder why PC would say this before a deal is done, hmmm? I've seen a report on preliminary contract talks, but unless these contract talks are far more advanced than the report implies this could instead could be posturing.

If I'm Geno, I'm saying these statements that you've linked if I want to see if there are other bidders willing to wow me and try to pull me away from any feelings toward committing against the Seahawks. But also having the double message of favoring Seattle. Don't get me wrong, I know he loves this team, but he would be the first QB in NFL history to possibly turn down $10's of millions just because there's a preference to retire with a team. Is the desire to retire a Seahawk more than say $10M, $20M, or $30M over the length of a contract? And consider that he's never had a massive payday before, one that could change his family for generations.

And if I'm Pete I need to show some reasonable intent. Maybe perhaps to shy away other potential bidders. Maybe to appease the fan base. But most importantly, to make Geno feel accepted and desired as he has been over the last few years, yet within reason (given his other quotes regarding "the system"). But I would not desire, if I were Pete, the outcome to become exorbitant and hold back the team's growth in other critical areas.

Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how things move forward in the coming weeks.

Yeah I can see Geno saying he loves the city and fans and all that BS....Even RW did that but for PC to act like it is just a little paper work that needs to get done? Seems crazy.

are you all seeing something I'm not? It's not like he said the contract is a done deal, just that he plans to keep Geno. Worst case scenario they can use the franchise tag, so I think all the statement says is Geno will be back one way or another.

Or maybe when he says "we've got our guy" me means Drew Lock!

As for the draft, if one of the QB hasn't been taken by the time #5 comes around, there will be teams willing to pay a steep price to pick him. It makes a lot more sense (to me) to trade back and pick a guy later. Looking how 7th rounders were having success this year it seems to be the way to go, and there are a LOT of QBs that look like they could play that should be available in the 4th-7th rounds. I could see the Seahawks taking somebody like Haener in the 4th or Stetson Bennett in the 6th.
