Re: Combine thread
Here’s an article on NFL.com written by Lance Zierlein, discussing Josh Allen during the 2017 college football season:
The scoop: “He scares me like he scares everyone, but he is easily the most physically talented quarterback (in this class). He will get drafted much higher than the level of his tape.” — AFC director of college scouting on Wyoming QB Josh Allen
The skinny: Listed at 6-foot-5, 233 pounds and with high-end arm talent, Allen is the prototype at the quarterback position. However, Allen’s production has been very pedestrian this season (181 yards passing per game, 55.9 percent completion rate, 12 TDs and 6 INTs in 8 games).
His accuracy and decision making are not where they need to be. In comparison, Carson Wentz had very similar physical traits and ability coming out of North Dakota State. He was the No. 2 overall selection of the 2016 draft, but his accuracy and football intelligence were exceptionally high. Coincidentally, Allen’s coach (Craig Bohl) helped groom Wentz at NDSU before being hired at Wyoming.
Allen might make a substantial leap forward with better talent surrounding him than what he’s working with at Wyoming. However, I’m not ready to say he’s a franchise quarterback at this juncture.
“He scares everyone” is the kind of thing you might hear about Anthony Richardson and Will Levis. Ditto the production, accuracy and decision making concerns and the feeling they aren’t ready.
As it happens, Allen’s physical talent was so enormous that he simply rose to the NFL occasion after a two-year learning curve. He has made the Bills a legitimate team after years of mediocrity and is beloved by fans.

Richardson is going to be hard to pass on.

Interesting point by Salk. How many running QBs have REALLY been a bust? I'd add RG III to Vince Young. But, that was more injuries, and both of those guys are MUCH smaller than this beast.Bigger and Faster than Derick Henry!

RG III and Vince Young were both WAAAAAAAAAY better QBs, though. Richardson doesn't have any real comps. Athletically, he is above everybody else that has ever shown up. QB-wise, he's further behind everybody else that has ever shown up. He has 12 career games, 7 of which he was terrible, and 1 of which was against Eastern Washington where he threw 10 passes. So, he had 4 games where he played ok - and those weren't even GOOD. He's kind of an enigma.Michael K. wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 7:39 pmRichardson is going to be hard to pass on.

As for running QBs that have been a bust, there have been plenty. Rick Mirer being the first. The script for all of them have been similar, at least of those that I think of, in that they come out and look great when they use their legs, but then the league figures them out (Kaepernick) or they get an injury to take away their mobility (Newton), and they flame out after a few years. The problem with Richardson is that he's 2-3 years from being able to play the position, so by the time he might figure it out, he'll probably have washed out.

I don't know that you can compare guys like Mirer. Imagine Culpepper playing the game the way Justin Fields does and Cam Newton did? Kaepernick, IMO, is a bit different as well. Had he not decided to get all fucking weird? Who knows. Not only did he turn teams off with his actions, he went Vegan and lost about forty pounds. The dude was SO SMALL at the end. This kid from Florida could eat Collin Kaep.
The Josh Allen thing is a pretty hard image for me to ignore. I thought the Bills were idiots for taking him. Oops. If he plays behind Smith for a year or two? And ends up being the next Josh Allen? We will all be pretty damn happy they took him.

well like I said, there is no comp for Richardson. Mirer was a running QB though, that they tried to make a pocket QB, which ruined him. Kaep sucked before he got weird - you can pinpoint when he got weird because it was when he started dating that black panthers chick - the NFL figured him out, that he couldn't read defenses, couldn't pass with touch. Then he got weird and things completely went off the rails for him.Michael K. wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 8:24 pmI don't know that you can compare guys like Mirer. I just watched an interview with Richardson and they asked him if he knew anything about the west coast offense - he said no. Not exactly a student of the game.
If we signed Geno and drafted Richardson and used him like Taysom Hill? yeah, I'd sign up for that. Draft Richardson and expect him to be a QB? blech. I want guys that are going to be upgrades right away, not take 3 years to get decent, just in time for a ridiculous contract.
*edit to add that Josh Allen sucked for the first two years.

Re: Combine thread
Too bad AR15 didn't stay another year either at FL. or elsewhere. The team he played on this year sucked, much like it did for Levis in Kentucky too.
Vince Young was mainly all legs till his final year in which 4 of his targets went off to play in the NFL and he also had Jaamal Charles as his RB. I think AR15 will have 1 target that will see limited NFL action and a big 1st round OG and that's about it. AR15 is uber talented but it would be a ton of risk to bet the #5 pick on.
Levis is also a very interesting case. There's some fandom chatter out there having drawn parallels with Brock Osweiler, but I don't buy this at all. Levis has shown more anticipation and is super smart. Most of the big prototypical QBs with strong arms that have ever failed were not very bright. In fact, I'm not able to find a single QB with similar attributes and short comings of Levis that had a little something between the ears ever fail on the NFL level. If Levis stayed another year with a decent supporting cast I'm sure he'd grow as a QB. Hell, I'm surprised his stats didn't regress further than they had, especially he played through injuries.
I strongly feel that PC/JS will see something in at least one of these two QBs at #5. Pete longs for the his old football model from 10 years ago, and is a little jealous that the 49er's are rolling it out by his remarks about them back during the WC game. It's like a new form of moneyball, but the football version for a few of these GM/Coach tandoms as long as it translates to production on the field.

Re: Combine thread
I might add that PC/JS are not known for hunting QBs that look like CJ Stroud or Bryce Young (less size lol). They tend to hunt for QBs that look like more like Will Levis, Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Anthony Richardson. What the latter have in common are dual-threat capabilities with explosive play making arms.
Re: Combine thread
There is lots of running and ultra mobile QBs that are currently successful.
Jones
Hurts
Allen
Fields will be.
Murray-I don’t like him. But, has had success.
Jackson
Herbert and Burrow are super mobile. Can be runners but choose to throw
Russ
NFL is different now. Look at the pocket less mobile guys, is this the way?? Mac
I guess I’m just not happy throwing thst much money on Geno.
