I don't think they are switching back. I started a thread about them maybe going back to the 4-3 but after reviewing their transactions, draft process (discussed in my pareto analysis), and the anticipation and desire of JS/PC of Woods coming back spells out to me 3-4 defense. I think we will be ok running the 3-4 with the newer personnel.D-train wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 9:14 pmThey ran a 3-4 last season with horrid LBs. I hope the switch back to 4-3. I look at the defense as three levels - line, LB and secondary. There can be flexibility, but you have to fall into one of those position groups. I will be very surprised is this defense is running a 3-4 - that is putting too much pressure on the teams weakest room - the LB's. I think they have to run a hybrid of a 4-3-4 or a 4-2-5 using Jamal Adams around the LOS a lot more. Off ball LB is a very weak position group for seattle. I do think the d line room is going to surprise some people. Tons of depth, youth and speed. They need a run stuffer for sure, but hopefully depth will win out over the course of the season and the inevitable injury attrition. They just need to be average to slightly above average for the d to be better. This defense should be very fast to the ball.SeattleAddict wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 3:12 pm
EDGE is actually OLB in a 3-4. It's pretty confusing when you try to pigeon hole things any more. For instance, Taylor was a DE in 2021, LB in 2022. Nwosu was a pass rushing OLB, but is probably listed as EDGE now. D. Jones is a DT, but really is a DE most of the time. The whole thing is designed for flexibility, so it's really hard to lump them together by position group.![]()

Yeah I feel like I am giving them the benefit of the doubt but I am really not. It is just positive regression to the mean. If they randomly picked new D lineman out of a barrel they would have to be better than last year's shit show.Cascade Kid wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 1:58 amI don't think they are switching back. Yessir!
QB: 8.5 - Geno is coming off a pro bowl season and has a high IQ with a low mileage chassis - his athleticism is wildy underrated.
RB: 9.5 - the depth is insane.
WR: 9 - The new WR should be a difference maker and make this group very hard to defend. this will stress defenses - and open underneath RB routes. If Matt Landers makes the roster - that group will be insane.
TE: 7 athletic group that should flourish with the attention on the WR group.
OL: 7.5 - underrated - depth at center - ungraded interior - sophs on the ends - a QB that reads and moves fast - stable of RB's - Ideal situation.
DL: 5.5 - going to be better than expected - mostly because of depth.
EDGE: 7.5 - a ton of talent, speed and depth. Late in the season this group will be formidable
LB: 5 - thinnest group on the squad. Secondary and line will have to over compensate.
DB: 9.5 - hard to find a more talented group in the league.

Re: Rate the position groups
People keep bashing last years defense without adding any context - they were a mess - but also transitioning into a new scheme with a bear front - that all fell apart when Adams went down. Adding in rookies (and vets) missing assignments making it look much worse. It was a combination of factors that all came together for maximum suckage. I hightly doubt that happens this year. Without a real space eating mauler in the middle I thing they have to use the 4-3 - not just for the obvious reason of managing the LOS - but protecting the LB group. 3-4 is not ideal for stopping the run when you have no mebane type in the middle and no LB's. They are gonna have to bulk up some guys and get quantity on the front line, IMO.D-train wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 11:42 amYeah I feel like I am giving them the benefit of the doubt but I am really not.
