Look at the players that so far have been picked up, pretty much trash . Guys of real value are going to be held on to until the deadline, other than a few exceptions, and I don't see dipoto doing an exceptional deal. In fact I think he feels they already did a pretty big deal picking up Taveras
This aged well.

For goodness sake Jerry. What are you waiting for? Didn’t you learn a thing from last year? It’s about hitting. Pull the trigger
He brought up Cole Young. What more could fans possibly want?
And when Robles and Raley come back, it'll be like they acquired two impact bats for nothing! SHEER GENIUS
Can you think of a significant trade earlier than Langston? They conceded in May

Oh they released taveras, yeah that seems pretty surprising in terms of dipoto acknowledging a mistake.

Perhaps it speaks to pressure he's feeling? You're right, it is atypical to what he would do.

Maybe his extension was for one year, he knows he's out if they don't make the playoffs, and he actually will be "aggressive" at the deadline... b/c what really does he have to lose?

He has everything to lose if he misses the playoffs with the same formula. He loses out on the best potential he'll maybe ever have to produce a WS winning team and he'll be labeled as a GM that didn't have what it takes to take a world-class pitching staff to the promise land... so why hire him?

Yeah, I hadn't taken into consideration how terrible he was, I think he forced their hand, particularly with his defense. You can try and stick with a guy that's terrible at the plate so long as they bring something in the field, but taveras was terrible there too. When he replaced Julio and proceeded to totally screw up was probably the last straw. Wilson trying not to do a JK imitation

Never. I remember what happened there, Langston had just turned down an extension offer and the Mariners decided to trade him while his value was at its peak. Good thing they did.

Yeah, it was the best trade the mariners ever pulled off, it's unfortunate Randy isn't in the hof as a mariner but that's another story. It's interesting that it's not done more often. Today you'd get hammered by the media, you're not allowed to concede until the trade deadline.

I have serious doubts that will matter. Remain in contention so they can make money and this ownership group won't give a shit. If the goal was to win they'd spend for a big time player, not the bunch of fucking nobodies and has beens they have added the past two or three seasons.

Dipotto is here to stay, until this team isn't profitable. And here in Seattle? When are they not going to be profitable?

Yeah, what exactly would be the justification for firing him? As I see it dipoto has delivered the team that Stanton has described he wants. I could go find the quotes, what he has talked about is sustainability. He wants a team that season to season is in the hunt for the playoffs. He's not interested in high priced FAs, he wants it built through the draft. That to me is pretty much exactly what Jerry has built. He's got a team that was in the playoff hunt up to the last week of the season and a top rated farm system, all at a modest cost.

So Stanton fires dipoto, then what? He has to go find another guy that shares his vision? Or hire a guy that wants to build through Free Agency? If he does fire dipoto I think he'd be a popular hire for another club, all he's done is deliver what his boss asked for.

If we lose tonight Dan Wilson will have met the Supreme Goal of winning 54 of his first 100 games.
