At least they didn't go 18 innings without scoring a run.

Seemed like the Ms were a bit nervous aside from Julio who seemed like he was ready to roll, but he should've stopped in between first and second to keep their rally alive. Rust might also have been a factor as they haven't really had to dial in on a game since Houston.

I thought Naylor left the yard after Julio.

I'm not too concerned about the pitching matchups with Detroit. The Ms can probably continue to hold their batters down with Castillo, Gilbert, and pen. Don't need to score 10 runs off Skuball to win the game. All they needed tonight was 3 runs. With one more pitch from Kirby all they needed was 1 run.

Huge win for Detroit. Series seems like either team could win it. I would say 50/50 at this point but need a win tomorrow or back will be massively up against the wall.

aid the offense is blameless I just didn’t get to that part yet. I’m at work and am only posting on breaks.

The offense pretty much sucked outside of Julio and Cal like you said. Also don’t get Raley pinch hitting at all. He’d gawd awful.
And Robles plays RF like superman.

I disagree with some substitutions where it looks like it could go extras and traditional extra innings rules. Scott Servais replaced Ty France with Dylan Moore in the 13th inning of the 18 inning game.

It's different regular season with the free runner on 2nd you gotta manage more aggressive. But, in post season you gotta manage it more conservatively and patiently. The risk has to be worth the reward when you start pulling guys out of the lineup.

Yeah, I don't want to hear about it being rust. Lets face it, you can look how they scored runs during the regular season. It would go from hot to cold and back again, and I don't think the Mariners were unique about that either. You are hoping to get on a roll when the playoffs hit but but who knows. I don't want to be a Debbie downer but it concerned me them being without Woo, that to me was a pretty significant handicap, and now that they have blown game one. And it being a five game series, that's another issue. A legitimate series needs to be seven games doesn't it?

Its funny to me, the experts would characterize the Mariners as setup for a "deep run" in the playoffs. Geez, its only two series and the first one is five games. What would be a deep run in the first place, winning both series?

couple of managing decisions that i don't think have been addressed.

Letting Kirby pitch to carpenter for the 3rd time...
It's a tough one," Wilson said, "and you do the best you can and try to take the information that you have and what you're seeing. And we thought George continued to throw the ball pretty well there and still had pretty good stuff and a lot left in the tank."

Kirby just missed inside with an 0-2 sinker. He then went to the sinker for a third straight time, but it traveled middle-up, about chest high, and Carpenter sent it 409 feet to give the Tigers a lead.

"I was seeing him well tonight, especially after that first at-bat," Carpenter said. "I feel like I got my timing back a little bit. And I just wanted to make sure to get a good pitch to hit that at-bat, because they had a base open, and I didn't know how they were going to pitch me. And so I felt like I was on time and had a good approach there."
With first base open, pitching to McKinstry instead of the right handed free swinging Baez. I don't like to second guess, but that one. If you are going to live by your splits at least be consistent about it?

"We talked about it," Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. "Obviously, Vargy gets the ball on the ground, and that's what he does best, righty or lefty and, you know, he got the ball on the ground."
Now you have to win 3 out of four and face Skuball twice, where's the hard part
Most worrisome is that Andrés Muñoz pitched two full innings for the first time since his rookie season in 2019, so the two-time All-Star closer’s availability for Sunday is at the very least in question.

“The Mariners got deeper and deeper into that bullpen, and that is where I think in a lot of ways this loss almost feels like a double defeat,” Morosi said, “because you have to face (reigning AL Cy Young Award winner) Tarik Skubal in Game 2 less than 24 hours from now, and of course you do this with your bullpen (having covered six innings) including Andrés Muñoz having thrown two innings in Game 1.”
