This loss is on Raley. WTF with stopping at first on an easy double?
That was some BS. Looked like he was going to be easily safe. Would like to see a view that shows the whole field to see what he saw.

Eric Young was giving Raley shit. Just mind-boggling, I mean that was an EASY double.

And is it the offense? Offense is going to suck at times but what's supposed to carry a team is consistent defense. The mariners have lost three consecutive one run games where they have had defensive lapses. That's the value of defense isn't it, winning these sorts of games? Every team is going to go through cold periods, the teams that really separate themselves as being great I think do it by pulling off victories on the strength of their defense. The mariners so far aren't doing that. They are going to win their 90 games but really is it whats going to keep them from winning 100? Letting wins slip away because you can't catch or throw the ball
Lol. No, I don't think the defense is winning us anything.

The pitching or offense will win and lose our games.

Defense, lol. Pfft.
I don't really differentiate a lot between pitching and defense. Pitching for me is an aspect of the defense, protecting the ball. It's hard to have good pitching with poor defense. And yeah, I believe pitching and defense can win ballgames

I separate them, other than when a pitcher's fielding a ball, that's defense.

Personally, I'd weight the three like this in impact on the game:

Offense: 10
Pitching: 10
Defense: 2

OK, that doesn't really go against my original post. If it's 2 it's still capable of winning ballgames isn't it? And that was my point. We are in a stretch where some solid defense could have pulled out a couple of wins. The best offenses are still streaky at times. Consistent solid defense can steal some wins through the course of a season. The mariners are blowing their chance to do that. They are wasting a string of solid pitching performances by not only struggling with the bats but also their gloves

Julio should have walked at least twice tonight. Does he even have an approach?

Here is his third AB vs. Eovaldi. How do you not turn that into a walk? All of those pitches are splitters. That's all he's throwing him here.

I've always had the belief that it's not really a positive thing when your best hitters walk.

Barry Bonds a prime example, obviously.

The year he hit 73 homeruns, he walked 177 times.

Was it good for the Giants that Bonds had the bat taken out of his hands 177 times? Probably not.

I have a feeling that applies to many hitters, and somewhere along the line there's a breaking point where walking is a net benefit to your team as opposed to having a typical outcome from the at bat.

I doubt there are many MOTO hitters where it's beneficial to your team that they're walking instead of getting something to swing at though.

Unless they hit like early season Julio.

Definitely get your point, and Julio's probably a guy that needs to draw more walks because he's not much of a middle of the order threat for most of the year. I just think it's an interesting discussion to be had.

If you look at Julio's career numbers, 4 years into his career, they're pretty amazing. It's an almost certain HOF track, probably on the first ballot. Just think how good he could be if he had an approach and a swing geared to drive the ball.

He swings at garbage so that's what they throw him. They know he's desperate to hit.
