Of course WAR was not a stat at the time. He bested Gonzalez in every single offensive stat except for HR and RBI and he did it while playing shortstop.

That was an insane year.

Brady Anderson hit .297 with 50 Bombs and finished 9th in the voting.
Big Mack led the League in both OBP and SlG. with a .467 and .730 respectively. His 1.198 OPS is the second highest of any AL player since 1957 and it only got him 7th place.
Griffey led the League with a 9.7 WAR and finished 4th.

There were 9 players in the AL that year with an OPS over 1.000. In the last 10 years there have only been 12 players total in the AL that have managed to post a 1.000 OPS.
