I doubt they would offer the QO but they might. It's hard to imagine a player having Randy's year accepting it. But the other consideration is the lockout and the new CBA, which may nix the QO system altogether.
But I'm with you that the QO is probably preferable. Two month rentals tend to not get that much at the deadline.
That's exactly why you offer it.
He's a Boras client, ofc he won't take the QO... you have to offer it to get the draft pick.
I'm aware of how the system works. I just question if the Mariners would take the chance of having to pay a high salary like that.
The QO is $22.05M... Randy is making $15.65M this year. A small bump offered to a player about to put up 5+ WAR for 1 year would be a dream, not something you run away from. And Scott Boras does not allow his players to sign QO's lol... it's a free draft pick.
Replying to Donn:
The key difference here is player performance...
Teo was a 108 OPS+ hitter, put up 2.3 bWAR, and only with the team for 1 year. He was not a good player for the M's.
Randy is currently a 140 OPS+ hitter, is on pace for over 5.0 bWAR, and has been a Mariner for 3 years. He has been a VERY good player for the M's.
The two situations aren't remotely similar.
