Spin your defense however you want.
Clearly, when the Mariners are #8 in wins and #19 in payroll, the obvious factor isn't replacing the GM. It's spending more money. Duh. Not a whole lot of spin required.

I agree with most of what DV has been saying.

I don't disagree with most of it either.

If Jerry didn't waste $30M year in and year out on his last 3 or 5 players he fills out the roster with, I wouldn't have any problem with him.

Unfortunately, he does so poorly at that that it doesn't seem like he can do what it takes when it comes down to it.

Being worried the next GM might be worse isn't worth keeping the current guy around when we know he can't pull it off.

His 11th season.

7 games below .500 on 8/23.

Just lost another blowout.

Bye Jer.

That to me is reviewing the process more than tossing it out.

I believe Stanton is a lot more involved in this than some might expect. I don't think hes interfering in player decisions but i do think hes activily involved in the process. This is what he wants, a team that depends on player development rather than FA signings, he has said so. And the fact is they have had some success at it lately.

You build a system, it can take time to get it operating. Thats why complaining about ten years ago doesnt make sense to me. That was before they came up with their system. You can complain about the system but at least they have one now. The mariners have an identity.

If Stanton replaces Dipoto its not going to be to replace his system, its going to be to find someone else to run it. And i think you run the risk of another learning curve. Stanton probably just promotes Hollander to do it. Firing Dipoto isnt triggering a mariners team dedicated to going for it and spending money to accomplish that

Hitting is what worries me since I read that Adam Jude article a few days ago. I don't mean how they're hitting right now specifically, but more the overall organization approach to hitting, and what they emphasize in all their meetings, in the minor leagues, etc.

I wonder if there's confusion about approach. Why does Julio still hit these weak ass grounders from time to time and why doesn't he walk more? Why doesn't the rest of the team walk more? I've always had the sense that the org is biased against players taking walks, which sounds silly because why wouldn't you want players to get on base? Obviously, every team will acknowledge at some level that a walk is better than an out. But, there is a difference between an aggressive approach and a more patient and passive approach at the plate, and I think, probably, the Mariners like guys to be more aggressive.

When I read that Jude article, it really made me wonder if the emphasis on pull side homeruns, to what extent have they been trying to get players to play outside their own abilities? That's so obviously wrong, they wouldn't do that would they? I mean, I can't imagine that they're trying to turn Leo Rivas into a homerun hitter. That would be too extreme. But what happens when they get someone like Canzone, a proven minor league hitter. Did they waste time with him trying to mold him into something he wasn't? Is that why he struggled at first? Then, last year, with Seitzer and Edgar running the show, he starts to develop. On the other hand, he is somewhat of a pull hitter now, so maybe he just needed time and a few trips down and back up to make that jump.

This is the sort of thing I worry about more than the specific personnel on the team and Jerry's bad track record of signing low-tier and mid-tier free agents.

Or maybe it takes better judgement

This thread is turning into a relatively calm, methodical attempt to "put a finger on it" and figure out what’s actually broken.

So, here’s another piece of evidence for the file: Mitch Garver.

Look, I didn’t even mind bringing him in the first time around. His 2023 playoff run with Texas was great—even if a deeper look showed he went 1-for-22 in the actual World Series and had that legendary "0-for-a-million" track record at T-Mobile Park. But fine. It was Free Agency, two years for $24m. All we really needed from him was the career .252 average and 12-15 homers he’d delivered up to that point.

Instead, he was atrocious. A .187 average— a fraction of his career production. Naturally, they declined the option and let him walk. Fair enough. Hard lesson learned.

Fast forward: Harry Ford gets traded, we have a clear back-up catcher issue to solve, and what does the front office do? They bring Garver back.

At what point, in any known galaxy, does anyone think “You know who solves our problem? Mitch Garver”? Even if Garver paid back his $12 million from the previous season just for the privilege of putting the uniform back on, it would still be a terrible deal for us.

You can trot out all the spreadsheets, analytics, and expected metrics you like. None of them can account for a decision that fundamentally moronic. Would any of the other 29 franchises in baseball look at a bloke who completely collapsed for two straight years, re-hire him, and put the exact same clown shoes on him to see if he lands on his face again?

Luck has nothing to do with self-inflicted roster moves. You don't get to blame bad luck when you make a bad decision, watch it fail, and then voluntarily choose to make the exact same decision again.

Oh and I forgot to mention that in the league table posted, we were something like 52-21 vs the Athletics, 23-14 vs White Sox and 10-3 vs Rockies - that's 85-38.

How does the record look without those victories against the bottom three?

They are 108-116 (.482) vs teams that ultimately made the play-offs. That's a fairer reflection of the quality of the team over the 5 year period.

Oversimplify by saying two playoff appearances in his entire tenure here isn’t good enough. Ridiculous.
