Yeah, losing Swanson hurts but they didn't want to use him in the playoffs for some reason anyways so might as well send him packing. One thing Dipoto is undoubtedly good at is finding bullpen talent.

Macko could be another Pablo Lopez/Freddy Peralta, but no denying we need offense now and this trade helped us get there.
Macko had stuff but I will be shocked if he becomes anything close to those two guys. 1.4 WHIP in A ball at almost 22 yo. Big Meh.
As long as Hernandez doesn't turn into an Adam Lind sized pumpkin I think it'll turn out well for the Mariners.

I'm surprised the BJ's traded him to the team that knocked them out of the playoffs, but I guess we'll see what happens when it's Hernandez vs. Swanson in the playoffs next season!

Hernandez seems like a potential guy that could be offered a QO after next season, so decent chance they get another Macko level player back out of it on the back end anyways.
Yes, a QO for Teoscar, and Swanson's likely not getting a QO when he leaves.

Hate to lose Swanny, but we needed another MOTO bat badly. Don't stop there, JD!! Move Flexen and Marco next!!

Isaiah Campbell and Berroa could make us soon forget Swanson imo. Campbell will be solid early, and Berroa could be another Brash type.

So, my guess is that dashes the hopes of those who felt we had a 0.001% chance of going after Judge. And I imagine this means we don't resign Mitch either. And I am feeling less confident that they will pursue Nimmo. This was an interesting "get".

Jon Morosi speculates the M's are going after upgrades to LF.

Yes, agree. Also, the fact they refused to pitch him in the first 3 games of the playoffs and or the fall out from that meant they didn't value him as highly as his stats indicated he should be and possible he had issues with that and made that known. Speculation but just a weird situation to not use him until game 4. I am sure he wasn't happy.

Would be great if guys like Campbell and Berroa can step up.

They need to bump Sewald down in their plans imo.

His numbers went south this season. He's a guy whose production could fall off a cliff at any time, I hope they prepare accordingly.

If Macko ends up being a good starter, it will be much easier to stomach with Gilbert, Kirby and Castillo at the top of the rotation than it was with Marco 2-3 years ago.

FYI:

Hernandez suffered an oblique injury in April and also caught Covid. In the month of May he played 19 games and posted a .428 OPS.

From June 1 forward, Hernandez slashed .285/.331/.536/.867, he was 5th in ISO (total raw power) among OF's in baseball, and 11th in overall WAR generated among OF's.

Since 2020... he's posted around an .860 overall OPS. He's a signficant upgrade over Haniger.

Swanson was a low to mid-leverage reliever who the Mariners didn’t trust in big spots in the playoffs. He often pitched when the M’s had a larger lead or needed a slight inning’s eater. According to Fangraphs, he threw 32 low-leverage innings, 19 mid-leverage, 8.2 high-leverage. He was a significantly worse pitcher in those high-leverage situations, allowing a .747 OPS vs a .513 OPS in low and mid leverage situations. He appeared to thrive in situations that just didn’t matter as much which tells me that the stats he threw up last year might be a little bit overvalued.

Macko might be decently regarded… but the stats haven’t caught up yet. He has a 4.55 ERA in his last 85 innings pitched around A, A+ and the AZ Fall League. His major flaws thus far have been injury concerns and a really high walk rate, as evident of a 1.411 WHIP in the minors. He’s a high upside but also high flop type prospect.

This is a fantastic trade for the M's.
