2020-2021 Hot Stove Thread
Re: 2020-2021 Hot Stove Thread
Musgrove will be 28 and just turned a corner, imo, and is still under the radar.
He threw his fastball less and relied on his curve more and it resulted in a huge boost in his K numbers.
More than any other trade I think this is the one I would pursue. Polanco is a great filler to lower what it would cost us in prospects by taking on the contract.

With Justin Turner being a free agent, Kyle Seager to the Dodgers would be an interesting avenue to explore also.

I don't really see the point of trading Seager. Don't see them getting anything special for him. They don't have a true 3B waiting in the wings and need to keep some semblance of the notion that they're trying to compete in 2021... plus he's one of the only M's that fans can identify with. They also have a tiny payroll and his contract isn't that bad.

Polanco is great filler??????????????????????? Yeah if you are filling your garden and need 235lbs of Manure.bpj wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 4:52 amMusgrove will be 28 and just turned a corner, imo, and is still under the radar.

Dude makes White seem like a pretty good hitter. .153/.214/.325/.539. FOR a CORNER OFer????
Musgrove, while I admit would be a good FA option for a mid rotation starter is not worth taking on garbage and giving up anything of significance for. And remember our starters are only going to pitch about once a week limiting their impact. He was 29th in the NL in starter WAR at 1.0. While his K rate went up about 50% his BB rate almost doubled.
Sheff had 1.6 WAR, Kikuchi had 1.1 WAR and Marge had 0.7 WAR for perspective.

Re: 2020-2021 Hot Stove Thread
We've seen plenty of players acquired and DFA'd directly after being part of a deal to acquire a better player across MLB.
I'd absolutely take on Polanco, even just to DFA him after spring training, to keep the cost in prospects low to acquire Musgrove, and the Pirates are trimming payroll. Seems a perfect fit.
As far as Musgrove, yeah, he only had 1.0 WAR this year. But, he accumulated the 1 WAR in 39 innings.
In the innings he was on the field, he added WAR at almost the same rate as Marco Gonzales (2 WAR in 69 innings).
He definitely had more walks, but when you're striking out the next guy up, it matters much less imo.

Gregory Polanco is a lefthand-hitting Domingo Santana: a 28- or 29-year-old, 6-foot-5, 235-pound corner outfielder from the Dominican Republic.
And that's not a compliment.
But Polanco's contract would bring down what a trade partner would need to offer the Pirates.
The Mariners are deep in outfield and pitching prospects but would anyone trade their No. 5 prospect (outfielder Taylor Trammell) and their No. 10 prospect (lefthander Brandon Williamson) for the package of Joe Musgrove, Gregory Polanco and Richard Rodriguez?
Baseball Trade Values approves the trade:

... and the Mariners get to keep the coveted Dylan Moore.
And that's not a compliment.

Re: 2020-2021 Hot Stove Thread
Agreed harmony. It has nothing to do with whatever value Polanco does or does not bring in the end. His part in the trade is just in making it cost a Taylor Trammell instead of a Noelvi Marte and taking into account the other teams goals (shedding payroll and adding near ML ready talent).harmony wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 5:25 pmGregory Polanco is a lefthand-hitting Domingo Santana: a 28- or 29-year-old, 6-foot-5, 235-pound corner outfielder from the Dominican Republic.

Polanco is a fine spaghetti at the wall change of scenery player, but might as well just think of it as money on Musgroves contract instead, which is very low to begin with at just $2.8 million in 2020.
You're not getting the type of player Musgrove is easily without taking on a contract or giving up talent imo.
This Dodgers-Braves trade being an example of DFA'ing a bad contract to make a deal happen.

Its a unique idea and I applaud your guys' creativity. Just think you might overthinking it for Musgrove and seems to fly in the face of of the stars and scrubs philosophy that I have embraced. Well I guess we got a scrub in the form of Palanco.
Would love to hear what others think.
Thanks again for posting your plan, Harmony.

Re: 2020-2021 Hot Stove Thread
I think Musgrove could be a solid number two for a couple seasons. Just entering his prime, under control for two years, not on the hook for 6 at $20/M each.
I don't know. I think he's being underestimated, but only time will tell with that also. He could be another guy things never come together for, but at least its two years for a comparatively low cost. In my opinion he's better than Foster, but probably equally under the radar before he broke out.
It's exactly the type of chance I would be taking instead of paying in free agency for too many years.
And the only way to add an ace right now is probably Bauer. I'd take both for two years with a big grin.

AND it might be a lot easier to trade for an SP and only let them pitch once a week than convince an FA worth his salt to agree to the training wheels program.bpj wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 11:21 pmI think Musgrove could be a solid number two for a couple seasons.
