There's nothing confusing about it. Cal forgot how to hit, Julio is having an okay but not great season, the bullpen is beat up, and Castillo hasn't pitched well and can't be moved because of his contract. Collectively, that's probably 10 wins.
It's confusing because we have one of the two most underachieving teams in baseball along with the Blew Jays. Cal has gone from one of the few 60 home run seasons in MLB history to very close to the worst season a starting Mariner catcher has ever had. Nobody in the 157+ years of MLB baseball has ever had a 180 like the one Cal's having.

My friends who I talk to who are fans of other teams are shocked that the Mariners are where they are. I'd say that qualifies them as a very confusing team.

Personally, I've never put stock in fWAR as according to it Yusei Kukuchi was a GOOD pitcher in a Mariner uniform.

Kkuchi had 2.4 fWAR in 3 seasons. That's not even close to good....

I remember there being one season where his fWAR was pretty good even though his ERA was close to five.

I use bWAR for pitchers and fWAR for hitters. fWAR is based on FIP.

David Schoenfield at ESPN has us trading Hancock to the Tards for Ivan Herrera. I think I'd do that trade, Herrera has regressed in 2026 but is only 26, has good pop and gets on base. https://www.baseball-reference.com/play ... iv01.shtml

He's DH'd in 67 games and caught in 41, so he's their backup catcher. What's odd is that their starting catcher has a - 0.4 WAR. Herrera's defense must be awful for him to be the backup to a bum. Hopefully he has a good attitude about it and he'd be replacing Garver which is a good thing in every way, shape and form possible.

Could you imagine if Efren Herrera was our kicker now with his career FG percentage of 67.8% and season high of 82.6%? Different times. If Jason Myers made 82.6% of his field goals we'd show up at Lumen with torches and pitchforks. I don't think that anything in sports has advanced more rapidly than field goal kicking.
