If they trade Kirby for anything less than an Otto Lopez or Fernando Tatis type player I'm going to lose it.

No prospects. I don't want Matt Shaw type players at all.
Would you trade him straight up for Miller?
The Padres wouldn't trade him straight up for Miller.

And I don't really see the need for an elite bullpen arm when our offense is complete and total ass.

Brash/Munoz is as desirable of an 8th/9th battery as you can get. Ferrer, Bazardo, Spier, Dominguez is pretty good otherwise.

The M's are 4th in baseball in bullpen ERA.
But you are kicking out the worst reliever in the pen for who might be the best reliever in history. Everyone shifts down a spot. Because our offense sucks we can't afford to blow another save the rest of the season. Might be good for 2-3 wins...

They're projecting a couple of weeks out.

I'd rather create a well-balanced team vs a team with major pitching strengths and no offense.

We've seen this story before and it never ends well for the M's.

I spaced on that but we are only 2/3 through the season so he is owed about $3M but whatever. Great trade.

Actually, there is a piece you all are missing in Castillo's contract. There is a vesting option for 2028 of $25mill that could be reached because Castillo could pitchn180innings. That makes it a possible bigger chunk of salary that the M's are dodging.
No it isn't because we would never let him get there...Sox might but that is irrelevant...
I said that as you were trying to figure out how much salary the M's offloaded. I agree that the M's probably would not have let it happen but you never know. Remember, he averaged 185+ innings/ year for the M's. There are scenarios where that may happen again.

Yeah... if he's an ace-level pitcher like he was in 2023... you let him throw 180.

They'll cap him to 160 or so next year if he's not good.

No chance in hell he throws 180 innings for the Sox.

If he's in their rotation and healthy he will have a chance to do it. He's pitching every fifth day and putting in the innings. They aren't going to just bench him. Castillo is in control of it in my mind. That is what Castillo has been about, cranking out the innings

They absolutely will.

If he's pitching to a 4.50+ ERA next year and is even sniffing 180 innings... they will scratch him or start to limit his innings.

Happens all of the time.

You think the Sox are going to just willingly keep him around for $24.5M if he's bad next year?

Sometimes I don't even know what I'm doing here on this forum with some of the bullshit I see get thrown around.

Yeah, if Kirby, Hancock, Miller, Gilbert and Kade go out on the town in Scottsdale next Spring and are driving to a restaurant and get hit by a drunk driver going 100mph putting them all in intensive care for 3 months. That's about the only scenario I can think of.
