I think thats it. Montez is a september callup. Thats generally considered to be about giving a prospect a taste of the big leagues as them being ready to save a season. They brought up Ford last season, did he ever actually play? Montez has struggled against left handed pitching so far in the minors. So dipoto promotes him and then runs him out there daily against ML lefties in an attempt to save the season? That to me would smell like negligence. Sacrificing his prospect to try and deflect from the lousy season. Dipotos approach might seem conservative but isnt that preferred to desperate attempts to save his job? I really don't want dipoto trying to save the season, that worries me

It doesn't have to do with options. The rule is that if you were on the big league roster you can't return to the minors during a lockout the next season.

He was going to need to be put on the 40 man roster which is what you are talking about. Players on the 40 are subject to the labor agreement. Leaving him in the minors wouldnt have made a difference

That would have applied more to emerson, his rule 5 wasnt coming up was it? They could have kept him in the minors if they hadnt added him to the 40 man roster

My point is that in the likely event of a lockout Montes won't be able to play minor league ball next season so i wouldn't be restricting his plate appearances now. But i guess they're screwed either way since apparently it's a given that he can't hit off left-handers and would be traumatized by the experience. Perhaps they could send him to Venezuela or Korea to skirt the lock-out rules.

Did you realize that if there is a lock-out next year Laz won't be eligible to play in the minors cuz he was put on the 40-man. Seems to me they were willing to risk a year of his development in order to capitalize on what he has to offer now. So why the kid glove treatment?

They would have had to put him on the 40 in a couple months to protect him from the Rule V draft but still I agree with you obviously....

It has nothing to do with defending dipoto. I dont believe theres a team in baseball thats making making a september prospect callup just to run him out there against whoever is pitching. You guys need to differenciate between your dipoto hate and generally accepted method. You can bitch about it all you want, but you are never going to get it.
