Jerry Dipoto and Position Players

Post by Captain 97 » Tue Aug 11, 2026 4:48 pm

This is Jerry Dipoto's 15th Season as a major League GM/President of Baseball operations.
He has drafted 216 position players.
25 have made the Big Leagues 11.6%
11 have a positive WAR in the Big Leagues 5.1%
5 have a career WAR over 2.0 in the Big Leagues 2.3%
3 have a career WAR over 5.0 in the Big Leagues 1.4%

The total career WAR for the 25 players he drafted that made the Big Leagues is 45.5 The vast majority of that is coming from 3 players Cal Raleigh, David Fletcher and Taylor Ward who combined for 41 WAR. the other 22 Big leaguers that he drafted have an average career WAR of 0.2

The biggest problem that this team has is that the President of baseball operations and his staff just flat out can't identify hitting talent. I think an analysis of his free agent signings and trade acquisitions would reveal similar results. The bum needs to go. See if you can keep the scouts on the pitching side and rebuild the whole philosophy on the position player side of the organization.

There's a major piece missing from this analysis.

I have said this elsewhere. Not sure I have said it here. The day he gets fired will be a top 10 best day of my life. No exaggeration.

On the bright side, having been a mediocre relief pitcher during his career has given him an eagle's eye on spotting mediocre relief pitchers to stock our bullpen with.

This is the second time we've hired a GM that the Angels fired with the same results, just like all of their players that they let go and we gobble up.

How does this compare to the results produced by a good GM?

Find a good GM that has been at it for that long and I'm sure Captain will run the numbers for you. lol

Here's Jack Z's drafts of position players only:

2009: 28 drafted, 7 made it including Kyle Seager, Dustin Ackley and Nick Franklin
2010: 18 drafted, 2 made it, nobody of note
2011: 23 drafted, 3 made it including Brad Miller
2012: 21 drafted, 6 made it including Chris Taylor, Mike Zunino and Mike Yastrzemski (I didn't know we drafted him!)
2013: 24 drafted, 5 made it including Tyler O'Neill
2014: 19 drafted, 1 made it, nobody of note
2015: 15 drafted, 2 made it, nobody of note

That's rather blah but better than DiPoto. Here's Bill Bavasi's drafts (Mariners only):

2004: 30 drafted, 4 made it including Michael Saunders
2005: 23 drafted, 2 made it, nobody of note
2006: 16 drafted, 1 made it, nobody of note
2007: 16 drafted, 1 made it, nobody of note
2008: 24 drafted, 0 made it

HOLY SHIT, that's beyond horrendous. Let's try Pat Gillick's drafts:

1999: 23 drafted, 4 made it including Willie F. Bloomquist
2000: 23 drafted, 4 made it, nobody of note
2001: 26 drafted, 2 made it, nobody of note
2002: 27 drafted, 5 made it, nobody of note
2003: 20 drafted, 1 made it, Adam Jones

That's almost as bad as Bavasi, thankfully Gillick had other talents.

I looked up the drafts in which we selected Junior and A-Rod were selected and in those drafts no other position players of note made it to the bigs.

Looks like Jack Z is actually the best of these drafters and the best drafting the franchise did was through much of the '80s.

Jerry and his scouts (position players) have overstayed their welcome.
