Selecting a Speaker of the House

Post by gil » Thu Jan 05, 2023 8:04 pm

I'm surprised no one has set up a thread on this. I gather that most people here are happy that the Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives. What do you think about the current (first time in 100 years) need for multiple ballots in selecting a Speaker? The media I read are presenting it as the most conservative members of the Republican caucus not wanting to elect McCarthy.

Can McCarthy make concessions on things like rules and committee chairmanships that will get these 20 or so Republicans to vote for him?

If McCarthy makes that sort or a deal, would the more "moderate" Republicans still support him?

Most importantly, what will be the outcome(s)?

They will likely get it done tomorrow and it will be forgotten about by MLK/Robert E Lee day. :)

Do you see McCarthy winning? He hasn't gained any ground now in votes #1 through #9.

We see this in other countries where they have a parliamentary system and more than two parties, which is most European countries I believe. The difference, in those systems, or many of them, is that because no one party has a majority, everyone understands they have to bargain and compromise to form a government. But here, politicians (especially in the House) get punished for that sort of behavior. It's extremely dysfunctional.

Now it's up to 11 votes. If McCarthy does eventually get it, he'll be the weakest speaker in modern history.

A lib friend was acting like a pissant about the failure of Republicans failing to elect a speaker so far, calling it an "embarrassment."

I told him, "No, this is an inconvenience. An embarrassment is Nancy the hag and her goose-stepping Democrats spending the last six years accomplishing nothing except further dividing the country by repeatedly impeaching a president (even out of office), wasting the nation's time on bullshit and vendettas, and trying to equate Jan. 6 with Pearl Harbor and September 11. An embarrassment is a vice-president who is so stupid she isn't allowed to speak anymore, and a President who is so senile his every comment has to be walked back and clarified by his handlers."
