The issue is two fold. Canzone hit lefties just fine in 2025 and then proved he could rake against them once they game him a chance last season. First of all Ref was a totally unnecessary waste of a roster spot for a part time DH. Money that could have been used on a reliever instead. Then once it was clear that he was cooked in early May not only did they keep running him out there, they idiotically hit him LEADOFF and kept him on the roster for TWO months too long just like they always do with these bums to try to squeeze blood from a turnip,...GL_Storm wrote: ↑Thu Nov 05, 2026 7:06 pmIt's reasonable to conclude that Wilson had direction from the front office on the use of platoons for Raley and Canzone. I doubt it was 100% prescriptive to the point where he had no latitude whatsoever, but obviously they signed Refsnyder for a reason and they expected the manager to be on board with that. I don't really have a problem with that and I would expect similar alignment with Kanzler or anyone else they hired for the Field Manager role.

Good sound analytics are good. The shit show Analytics the M's use are worthless.. Pretty Simple.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Thu Nov 05, 2026 8:20 pmI think you have this romantic notion of what a field manager is supposed to be that is largely out of date. I don't think there are any managers like Lou Piniella anymore. It's a different, more analytically driven era. Front offices are driven by analytics more than ever before, and managers are expected to be on board with that on the execution side.Michael K. wrote: ↑Thu Nov 05, 2026 7:46 pmAlignment is one thing. They trade for and OF and the first interview with the GM he mentions how he and Jerry are going to go meet with Dan to discuss where he will bat in the lineup! Can you imagine that conversation coming from Gillick before he goes to meet with Sweet Lou? Sure, different times....but come one.
I can't imagine the line of actual proven managers that want to work for this organization is very long.

Okay, but the decision to sign Refsnyder was on the front office and keeping him on the roster was almost certainly a front office decision as well. I guess the argument is that Dan should have simply stopped playing him. At any rate, I expect anyone they hired for the Field Manager role would be aligned with how the front office builds the roster.D-train wrote: ↑Thu Nov 05, 2026 10:00 pmThe issue is two fold. Re: Breaking News: Kanzler will be the new manager
I am sure that Dan Wilson who played in the era of traditional leadoff hitters like Rickey and Tim Raines was totally into the idea of hitting Rob Refsnyder at leadoff on May 3rd when he was hitting .122 with a .196 OPS. lol

This, but we just double down every year and lean into it. It's as if Jerry believes that if he is wrong almost every year, the one year he is right will be the proof that he is a genius. It's a joke.

This is precisely why no one with any decent baseball resume was interested in this job.

I think the front office got exactly what they wanted. I don't buy into the puppet concept that many of you are spouting. I think that's overly simplistic. Jerry said in that press conference that he wanted someone from the outside with a fresh voice and new ideas. I think going with a younger guy was a deliberate choice, someone that isn't so far away from these guys in life experience.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 07, 2026 12:54 amGL_Storm wrote: ↑Thu Nov 05, 2026 11:47 pmOkay, but the decision to sign Refsnyder was on the front office and keeping him on the roster was almost certainly a front office decision as well. The best thing I heard him say was that he's not going to have a one size fits all control the zone or dominate The Zone b*******. It's going to be tailored depending on each hitter skill set instead of this nonsensical mantra of a cookie cutter approach and talking points that Jerry's been spewing for over a decade

He's not going to turn cal into a slap hitter or Colts into a three outcome swing for the fences hitter. It's only talk right now but the talk sounds good to me so far.
