Tatis could seriously flame out. Hate to lose Gilbert over an immature ass hat that could just as easily walk away from a game he seems to not care about as become a perennial All Star.

Brandon Nimmo: .800 OPS / 134 wRC+ / 4.5 WAR
Bryan Reynolds: .806 OPS / 125 wRC+ / 2.9 WAR
Jarred Kelenic: .534 OPS / 55 wRC+ / -.1 WAR

Logan Gilbert: 3.20 ERA / 3.2 WAR
Jose Quintana: 2.93 ERA / 4.0 WAR

Nimmo signed for 6yrs/$182M
Quintana signed for 2yrs/$26M

It's becoming pretty clear what the Mariners need to be doing. Trading from their pitching depth for bats, and signing pitching.
I'd be ok with trading Gilbert so long as we got Senga. But it'd hurt a helluva lot more than the Castillo deal.
In isolation, I guess it would hurt. I'm not overly attached, his production was pretty replaceable. Jose Quintana was better in 2022 and got 2 years at $13M per.

If Logan's being replaced with a good free agent and you're adding a premier offensive player on top of it, it seems like a no-brainer because a good pitcher plus a good hitter is better than just a good pitcher every day of the week.

For all we know Gilbert, Kirby and Cal could hire Scott Boras by 2025 and all the talk about extending them is a moot point anyways.

The Mariners could have just spent 8 years and $162M in free agency I guess.

But if they're not going to do that they need to be open to upgrading the lineup in a different way.

Meanwhile starting pitching is out there for the taking (assuming bats aren't in a rush to sign here).
Quintana entering age 34, likely descends from that outlier season he had in '22
Gilbert entering age 26 is on the ascend. You'd be rather foolish to make this switch

Here's an idea....

Tatis - Gilbert swap.jpg

Again, I like it if we acquire someone like a Blake Snell to the starting rotation.
Maybe there's a way to get both.
lol, Blake Snell. Snell is trash. Super inconsistent. Was 8-10 last yr with 1.20 WHIP over 128 IP. We need horses, not someone who barely pitches 4 of 6 months

Maybe, but fortunately there are better arms available.

What would be foolish would be sitting on excess pitching when you can't field a quality lineup.

We see why I wasn't a particularly big fan of the trade for Castillo at the time. We spent our 2 best offensive assets at the time, and now the money on Castillo, which in and of itself isn't bad, but now we have what is probably a top 5 rotation in MLB, and a lineup that will be lucky to be in the top half, with almost nobody coming up the next 2 years to augment the lineup. Their strategy with pitching and hitting just aren't lining up.

Castillo is going to be Felix Hernandez 2.0 going 13-12 with a 2.27 ERA.

Yep, they're going to have to deal from their pitching depth even if only because they don't have enough space for everyone going forward.

They have 80% of the rotation locked up for 4-6 years and a line of guys 6 deep that want the 5th spot.

I'd prefer they trade guys before they lose value due to injury/performance.

Columnist Jim Bowden at The Athletic gives the Seattle Mariners a grade of A- at this early point of the offseason:
The Mariners have had a strong start to the offseason, highlighted by their trade for right fielder Teoscar Hernández, a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. Hernández will provide solid defense and 25-to-30 home run power. The Mariners improved up the middle by landing second baseman Kolten Wong, a two-time Gold Glove winner, in a trade with Milwaukee. Wong hits right-handed pitching well (.277/.357/.489 slash line in 2022) and can platoon with Dylan Moore at second base. And the Mariners aren’t done: They are expected to acquire one or two more veteran hitters who can play left field or DH.

Well yeah, obviously you would do that deal. But I wonder if the M's would just because of the stink of steroids and their whole thing about being family friendly. And then you have the complete lack of maturity of the player to consider on top of all that.
Yes. I was contemplating that as well. Might be why SD would be willing to let him go too. Tatis that is.

More rumblings on a possible Bryan Renolds trade.
