I had a near-argument last week with a friend who believes that transgender women should be allowed in women's sports. We agreed that a 20-something or 30-something guy can't simply say "I am a transgender woman" and qualify. Her position is that there has to be some period of time with hormone replacement therapy (including testosterone-suppression therapy). I argued that if a biological male goes through puberty, that person should not be allowed in women's sports. She does not agree. I guess she thinks that the hormone therapy overcomes the effects of male puberty.

For some reason, she thinks that my position is "anti-trans." I think she is not seeing any subtlety to the issue, that it is all or nothing. I think it is ok for trans people to be accepted and legally protected (I should say, more than ok - I support acceptance and protections), but I don't think they should be able to automatically have all the privileges of their "new gender."

Are you saying that it is ok to discriminate against people because they are in one of these groups? I don't know if special protection is the right term, but what I mean is that it should be, for example, [1] illegal to discriminate against a white person in hiring for a job, and [2] illegal to discriminate against a trans person who wants to eat at a restaurant.
