"I am trans-gender, identifying as a woman for the benefit of basketball"

Fucking funny.

I had a near-argument last week with a friend who believes that transgender women should be allowed in women's sports. We agreed that a 20-something or 30-something guy can't simply say "I am a transgender woman" and qualify. Her position is that there has to be some period of time with hormone replacement therapy (including testosterone-suppression therapy). I argued that if a biological male goes through puberty, that person should not be allowed in women's sports. She does not agree. I guess she thinks that the hormone therapy overcomes the effects of male puberty.

For some reason, she thinks that my position is "anti-trans." I think she is not seeing any subtlety to the issue, that it is all or nothing. I think it is ok for trans people to be accepted and legally protected (I should say, more than ok - I support acceptance and protections), but I don't think they should be able to automatically have all the privileges of their "new gender."

I DO NOT ACCEPT any special protections for ANY groups in America no matter what sex, religion, gender or race they are (or claim to me), including but not limited to:
Gay
Islam
Trans
White
Black
Brown
Red
Yellow

Do you get my drift?

Are you saying that it is ok to discriminate against people because they are in one of these groups? I don't know if special protection is the right term, but what I mean is that it should be, for example, [1] illegal to discriminate against a white person in hiring for a job, and [2] illegal to discriminate against a trans person who wants to eat at a restaurant.

Gil, you should know me better than that!! You already know that I am an "even-Stephen" type of guy.... every citizen in this country has the same rights and liberties.

But to answer your [absurd] question; Any discrimination is wrong. Having special laws to protect "special groups" is discriminating against the general population as it gives these 'special people' a boost over the general population.

There are enough laws protecting the general public, which is were we all are... nobody needs special laws to help them.

Exactly. There was a time that they were needed but not in the last 50 years or so yet the grifters still want to keep it going....

I have probably posted this before but saying that requiring voter ID for ALL voters is Jim Crow 2.0 is a complete abomination and any Democrat that uses that phrase should be Censured. Imagine if you were an elderly black person that had to endure these actual horrific Jim Crow 1.0 laws and now seeing them equated to simply needing ID to Vote. Just disgusting.

Agreed. Although there are so many people out there now who think they're 'special' and deserve special treatment.

On a related note, I just can't get my head around the victim mentality. Who hasn't experienced anxiety (or depression or any other cocktail of emotions) on some level? So what do you do? You fight through it and move on. Yes, there are extreme cases, but most of us are going through some kind of shit every day. And yet we keep going.

Nobody said life was easy. Creating a bunch of 'special' laws only makes the average person softer. Sometimes (most of the time) ya just gotta man up.

Apologies if I post essentially the same thing twice. I just wrote up something that disappeared.

WallaWalla, Yes you are, and I value our discussions here. I'm not questioning your values, but I'm trying to get at something that I may not be expressing well. When you say "any discrimination is wrong", it sounds perfect, like something we should all agree to. But the way it is put into practice (by law, I mean) I don't think it's clean cut.

Example: I need to hire several people for my business. In walks a guy with a bow tie. I have had bad associations with bow tie wearers. I don't hire him for that reason, even though he is perfectly qualified. As far as a know this is NOT illegal (even though I admit I am discriminating).

Next, in walks a white guy. I have had bad associations with white people. I don't hire him for that reason, even though he is perfectly qualified. As far as a know this IS illegal, because federal (and at least in Washington) state laws don't allow me to discriminate on the basis or race.

So do you think I should (legally) be prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race? I do. Is this protecting a "special group" or is it protecting the general public? (Just please don't tell me I have to hire bow tie guy. lol)
