Big 12 imploding
Looks like Oklahoma and Texas bailing to join the SEC.
So what will happen with the remaining teams?

Re: Big 12 imploding
The other teams don't hold great economic value, but I imagine at least four of them end up in the PAC-12 as we usher in the era of the Super Conferences. I fully expect there to be four 16 team super conferences - who then simply secede from the NCAA. They just don't need the NCAA - and this is all about money anymore. OK State, texas tech, maybe Baylor and TCU to the PAC-12. Years ago there was that talk of Texas and OK to the PAC-12 but it didn't materialize - THAT would've been a great boost for the PAC - but while everyone else has been playing chess, the PAC-12 has been playing checkers and they're going to be the weakest conference in the country. OK and TX would've made for some really good competition. The biggest hang up was always The Longhorn Network.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 2:31 pmLooks like Oklahoma and Texas bailing to join the SEC.So what will happen with the remaining teams?
College football is about to enter the age of decline - just like the NFL. You start killing off all the rivalry games - which is what makes college ball so great - and it's buh bye. Add in paying the players - this won't end well.
Another team I think would be a interesting addition to the PAC would be BYU. Usually pretty competitive, they're regional, could make for some interesting rivalries.

OK State, Baylor, Texas Tech and TCU to the PAC-12 could make sense - they hold the most football value. Because of the basketball program, Kansas probably won't have a hard time finding a home - maybe the BIG 10. WV back to the Big East makes sense, leaving K State & Iowa State likely to have to drop into a lower conference as they don't bring in any money.
This same type of expansion could spell doom for smaller schools - schools that need the money to sustain and hand out scholarships. Schools like Wazzu and Oregon State could face the same situation - being forced in to a lower conference like the WAC or CAA to survive. Is this really what we want to see happen? I'm not even sure UC Berkeley can sustain. Imagine the Apple Cup or the Civil War rivalries being eliminated - because they think the TV money is the thing to chase. In the short run, sure, but in the long run, I think most fans lose interest pretty quickly. I always thought the bitter rivalries were the best part of college football - many have sustained for almost a century - but when you take that away, you really take away precisely what made the games so valuable - and so watchable.

It just doesn't feel right to me geographically to be adding teams in Oklahoma and Texas to the Pac. I'd like to see Boise State, San Diego State and BYU join the conference. BYU has a huge following, Boise State is a strong program and San Diego State would add another major media market to the conference. for a 4th team you could look at UNLV to get the Vegas Market or you could go out of the Box with Hawaii. I feel like they could be a juggernaut in recruiting if they were in a decent conference.

People will say Hawaii is too far but from home to hotel it is probably the same as Seattle to Tucson.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 4:12 amIt just doesn't feel right to me geographically to be adding teams in Oklahoma and Texas to the Pac. Re: Big 12 imploding
I have to disagree. Hawaii, SD State and UNLV are bottom feeders that bring no financial value to the conference, not to mention zero competitive value or any recruiting value. Those places are already picked clean of talent by bigger schools. The PAC would be losing more money bringing in those teams. Same with Boise State - while usually competitive - zero financial gain. Zero gain in recruiting. Maybe some competition added. BYU makes sense - mostly because of their quality programs. They may bring in money, that's debatable, but they are a solid, high profile division one school. You add Hawaii, UNLV, SD State who have zero national visibility, and Boise State who has a modest national imprint - you're basically downgrading the entire conference to WAC status. OK State, Baylor, Tech, TCU - likely all make money and are highly competitive schools in multiple sports that can compete and recruit on a national level.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 4:12 amIt just doesn't feel right to me geographically to be adding teams in Oklahoma and Texas to the Pac.
