The dust has not settled. I'd like to see what Seattle does before the end if the deadline. Tons of draft capital to make moves.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 1:01 amOnce again, keeping Graveman and trying for the wildcard does not make it the "end goal" keeping graveman does not derail the rebuild. Toro adds nothing that they couldn't have gotten just as easily in the off season. Competing now and in the years to come is not an either or proposition.Juliooooo wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 12:17 amBecause I'm not so myopic thinking that making a wildcard this year should be the end goalCaptain 97 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 12:12 am
When you haven't made the playoffs in 20 years How could you possibly be ok with throwing the towel in on a season when you are 1 game out of the wildcard? Seriously they have all the payroll in the world. Toro brings absolutely nothing that you couldn't easily replace in the offseason.

Pretty much sums it up..this is a business and these two deals are only marginal unless Toros develops the way Haniger did for example as Darren suggested... BTW.. teams are going to be plucking players out of this farm system in the off season rule 5 draft. We can't protect them all.... so it may be prudent to spend a little of that "ton of draft capital".Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 5:11 pmI know emotions are high, but Abraham Toro lengthens this lineup. Our bullpen is stocked to the brim and we have two excellent pitchers joining us next year in Ken Giles and Andres Munóz. Not to mention the three elite arms already on the team in Paul Sewald, Drew Steckenrider, and JT Chargois. Casey Sadler has also come off the IL as has Erik Swanson. And Hector Santiago has served his ridiculous suspension.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 12:20 amThey could have added someone better than that by opening their wallets this off-season. I'd rather win the Division next year and future years.
Our infield ranks have very little depth. Our second base position is statistically the WORST in baseball next to Baltimore's. I love me some Dylan Moore, but he is the true definition of a Utility player and Kendall Graveman is a free agent at the end of the season. We have control over Toro's contract, who was Houston's #3 prospect for the next five seasons.
There's no guarantee that Jerry would be willing to pay the massive contract that Gravemen will surely command in the offseason, and he will. Money that could be allocated to other more important area's of the roster such as the starting rotation. Toro is cost controlled through 2026.
Dipoto has also stated more moves are yet to come. He has reconstructed this roster through augmentation to where we are eight games over .500 and contending for the Wild Card without sacrificing or mortgaging the future of this franchise. The farm system remains one of the best in baseball. The Mariners have a ton of draft capital that they can choose to use to further augment the Big League roster.
I know this is a bitter pill to swallow, it is, but we must believe in the process. This is a business.
Go M's!

This is the shit that we go through every year. One game out of a playoff spot, playing a team in our division, we give them our best bullpen arm for a scrub never- will - be and a has - been. THIS is why I get pissed every year...this is what happens when I start paying attention.
Re: Mariners TRADE Graveman to Astros!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!?????
I am saying it is too early to say he is a never will be. Most weren't excited when we got Haniger even though he also raked in the minors just like Toro has.Michael K. wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 5:30 pmDid we trade an important playoff piece while one game out to get Hanniger?D-train wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 5:16 pmDid you see my Haniger Toro comparison?Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 5:12 pm
Statistically Paul Sewald has been our best bullpen arm.
Toro is an upgrade over Moore and Long.

So, miss the playoffs again for a guy that might be pretty good in 2 or 3 years. Cool. Ten year plan, here we come.
Re: Mariners TRADE Graveman to Astros!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!?????
Very good chance the upgrade of Toro over Moore is worth more than the downgrade of Graveman to whoever replaces his innings so the move doesn't lessen the odds of making the playoff imo.

Good point on the rule 5 draft. I forgot to include that in my analysis.AT Fresno wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 5:28 pmPretty much sums it up..this is a business and these two deals are only marginal unless Toros develops the way Haniger did for example as Darren suggested... Fangraphs statistically calculated that the Mariners only have a 6.85% chance of making the playoffs. This was never our year to contend. Our true window of contention is not until next year. This year was about maturing and identifying core players on which to build a franchise around.
It dramatically affects the team chemistry no doubt, but this trade most definitely helps our ballclub by adding to an area of need such as our infield. Kyle Seager is a free agent at the end of the season and most likely will not be retained. Toro has been blocked at all infield positions in Houston and not given much of a chance to develop like Ty France was in San Diego. Dipoto said that there are more moves to be made in which might help us to understand the ultimate outcome of this move. It does seem a bit odd with the timing, no doubt.
There are other leaders on this team such as Mitch Haniger, Kyle Seager, and Marco Gonzales that can carry us through contention. In order to gain something of value, something must be given up. Two more months of Graveman over a budding prospect such as Toro is a no Brainer. The timing of the situation as well as the destination couldn't be more poorly timed or calculated, I can sympathize.
Jerry should have a pulse on his players. But he has to play fantasy baseball in order to win the World Series.
This feels like when Thanos sacrificed his daughter Gamora for the Inifinity stone and the ultimate prize of the Infinity Gauntlet, but worse!

Re: Mariners TRADE Graveman to Astros!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!?????
I believe the Mariners won this deal, as did Houston. The Mariners aren’t a better team today than yesterday, but we gave up a very effective relief pitcher who will be a free agent at the end of the season, as well as a disaster of a pitcher who was never going to pitch for them again, in Montero. But this trade is not about Montero or Joe Smith. Its about Kendall Graveman and Abraham Toro.
The Mariners received a decent relief pitcher having a rough year, along with a young infielder, who will be controllable for many years. I know the terms of the length of contract do not sway your decision on the deal, but a cost controlled chip like that does bring value to the organization. I mean it landed the Astros Kendall Graveman.
Toro is still young and hasn’t gotten a huge opportunity yet in Houston as I stated earlier, but to think that we may have gotten a "switch hitting" third baseman of the future, for a pitcher on an expiring contract, that's a better option at utility usage than Dylan Moore, I’d say that's not too shabby.
It'd be best to wait until after the deadline before we judge the totality of all these moves. Lord knows what else Trader Jerry has up his sleeve.
The only really bad part of this deal is the timing. Yes we all despise Houston and do not want to help them under any circumstances, but we were never going to win the division this year, and the odds are against us at making the wild card. Relievers are usually volatile and Graveman is no exception. I definitely felt a bad taste in my mouth after the news broke last night, but the GM has to take the long view. Honestly it made me think of the scene "you've been traded" from Moneyball. Toro has some real potential; at the very least he's a trade chip or free's up options elsewhere.
Asked why the move made sense for the Mariners, Dipoto offered this explanation.
“It probably doesn’t as a stand-alone, but it’s part of a context that I believe is going to be an ongoing story over the next couple of days,” he said. “So as we move toward the trade deadline (July 30). We have been pretty open in sharing the idea that we’re trying to both address present and future, and we remain actively engaged in the market and trying to address upgrades now, that will give us a chance to be as competitive as we can over the next 60 games and hopefully into the postseason.”
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Mariners “are far from done” and are looking to be active in the trade market before Friday’s deadline.
With Graveman gone, Paul Sewald, who has been phenomenal this year, should step into the closer’s role. @brianmctaggart was first on the trade.
