FWIW Xander Bogaerts is a year younger than Robinson Cano was in December 2013 when the Mariners signed Cano to a 10-year, $240 million contract.

At the time Cano had posted 35.8 fWAR in 1,374 games with the Yankees while Bogaerts has posted 34.2 fWAR in 1,264 games with the Red Sox.

Interesting comp of middle infielders from the American League East.

So columnist Jim Bowden's projected seven-year AAV of $28 million for Xander Bogaerts comes in under the inflation-adjusted $30+ million AAV for Robinson Cano.

Inflation for the next seven years may diverge from the inflation of the past decade. And, of course, we're not comparing lump-sum payments in 2014 and 2022.

Right. Good point... I went quick and dirty. Those last three years on the Cano deal were silly but needed to get him to S. Alaska from Gotham City.

Anyway, the lineup lacks a bat to be feared.

While all the SS's have good bats, none of them scare an opposing team.

When Trout, Alvarez, Judge come to the dish it makes ya nervous.

I want the M's to have a bat like that and I don't understand paying a SS $30+ million AAV when they don't provide that.

The 4x Championship Series teams didn't have star SS's. But they all had a superstar bat capable of hanging 1.000 OPS: Machado, Harper, Judge, Alvarez.

Yep, the SS's are secondary if they don't go after Judge.

Not according to Dipoto and 95% of fans and 90% of Seattle media.

They think adding a star SS is what thrusts us into true WS contention.

I just sit here laughing.

What's a .820 OPS SS gonna do to a lineup that was mediocre at best? People can't seem to wrap their minds around the true answer: "NOT MUCH."

Its almost a 5 WAR upgrade over last season's Middle INF tandem but yeah, 10+ WAR out of Judge is much better...

I don't know about Hays, but I do think that Baltimore is a good trading partner for Chris Flexen. Their minor leagues are stocked, and they also have a lot of MLB ready talent.

Hays looks okay to me, but I do wonder a bit about ballpark effects. Baltimore is one of the smaller parks, isn't it?

Baltimore has that weird LF where they added about 20+feet. I would guess the park hurts him as a righty

If the M's can go out, and sign Nimmo and Bogarts, then you can trade Flexen plus spare parts for whatever else you need. I don't think the M's should go after a FA pitcher. We've been developing pitching at the highest level, albeit successfully, and have more than enough young arms to fight for the #5 spot(Gonzales, Brash, Dollard, Hancock, Miller).

I really like D. Moore and S. Haggerty on the roster next year. Both keep Toro off the ML roster until he proves he can hit big league pitching. We should also be looking at another seasoned veteran to displace Santana. Jose Abreu anyone?

That leaves, Kelenic, Winker, Trammel, Lewis, Marlowe and whatever possible trade you could muster fighting for that LF and 4th OF position. Which easily could be held down by Swaggerty or DMO.

There were a lot of injuries, combined with some suspensions. So I'd really like to see us acquire some premium depth that can hit. Guys like Frazier, Winker, Crawford, and Toro saw way too many at bats this year. I get it if you're playing gold glove defense, but none of those guys were in the Top 5, hell Top 10 at their position. Now, this team was 1st in defense, but if we can get even better in that department, great, especially if you aren't going to hit much.
