Finally! Official Hot Stove League Thread
Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League Thread
Shorter term actually leaves you with more flexibility in the long term. They care about the flexibility, not the actual $$ amount of say, 200m or 225m. It's about being flexible. And btw, Ohtani is the player they've long wanted this flexibility for!!!
Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League Thread
I don't even want Ohtani btw, I think it will take $50m AAV to get him and potentially 6 or 7 yrs. Not to mention it's going to require going to a 6-man rotation. That weakens the value of Castillo, Kirby, Gilbert, Hancock et al. And while he brings great value and is an exciting player to watch, I'd rather spread that wealth around and not go to a 6-man roto

Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League Thread
You are still paying him $250 Mil either Way. With a 10 year deal You can just DFA him after 5 years or keep him if he is still good. 10 year deal is more flexible and the cash is deferred resulting in a lower Net Present Value of cash outlay.

I doubt the Mariners will be seriously in on Ohtani. If I had to guess, Dodger, Padres, Giants, Yankees, and Mets will all be in the mix.
Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League Thread
I think its funny they've watched cheap 1B's get signed and now they're looking for a player (exactly like Ty France) that could back up at 1B, 3B and DH.
They're oblivious to what they already have in hand, but they only focus on versatility from the guys they want to sign.
Bunch of clowns in the front office.
And we've lost Haniger (RH), Winker (LH) and Frazier (LH), added Hernandez (RH) and Wong (LH), but somehow we need a RH bat now.... makes no sense.
Just spend the money or make the trade for a good player that doesn't need to be platooned- how about that.

I am laughing as we sit on the sidelines and free agent after free agent sign elsewhere.
Then people think Senga and or Ohtani will be signed by us! Lol!
We are a minor league franchise pretending to swim with the big boys.

Doesn't Profar play all 4 corner spots as well as 2B? And he's a switch-hitter. Been banging the drum on him for 2 weeks now.bpj wrote: ↑Thu Dec 08, 2022 12:15 amI think its funny they've watched cheap 1B's get signed and now they're looking for a player (exactly like Ty France) that could back up at 1B, 3B and DH.

Maybe he does, but he also has a career wRC+ lower than JP Crawford, Dylan Moore, and about equal to Sam Haggerty.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Thu Dec 08, 2022 12:40 amDoesn't Profar play all 4 corner spots as well as 2B? Hopefully they're aiming higher than that, otherwise there's no point in paying someone to do what Moore/Haggerty can already do.
Here's a comparison-

This is how they play outside of their Home park, in just Away games, I added Adam Frazier in for context-
