A center for Seattle in the 20's?

Post by Sexymarinersfan » Sat Apr 15, 2023 2:23 pm

Tony Pauline is reporting that the Seahawks sent Steve Hutchinson to work out Joe Tippmann and John Michael Schmitz recently:

Hall of Famer Steve Hutchinson, now an offensive line consultant for the Seahawks, met with Tippmann earlier this week as Seattle debates which center grades higher, the Wisconsin junior or Schmitz.

Tippmann could be the Seahawks’ selection at 20, the same pick the Lions used to select Ragnow in 2018. Seattle will also look to trade down from 20 with the hopes Tippmann or Schmitz are available later. I’m told discussions are already taking place to move that selection.

If they are able to trade down from pick 20, Schmitz could be their guy. If he happens to be available to Seattle at pick 37, it would be manna from heaven for the franchise.

It’s an interesting report and chimes with a lot of what we’ve been discussing recently. When I appeared on the ‘5th Year Option’ podcast this week I said I was going to mock Schmitz to Seattle in every mock between now and draft. Twenty-four hours later I went back on that, because it was just too tempting to have the Seahawks trade down below the Giants, with New York selecting Schmitz at #26.

My focus so far has been on Schmitz and Luke Wypler. Both ran good short shuttles (4.53 for Wypler, 4.56 for Schmitz). That is crucial for the scheme. They both have wrestling backgrounds. They aren’t too tall and a year ago Pete Carroll mentioned at the owners meeting they wanted a shorter center for leverage purposes.

I hadn’t really considered Tippmann for that reason. He’s 6-6. He also didn’t do any combine or pro-day testing. However, he was listed on Bruce Feldman’s freaks list and is reportedly capable of running a remarkable 4.31 shuttle. If you’re wondering why he might be considered as high as #20 — there’s your reason.

According to Dane Brugler, “(Tippmann’s) teammates describe him as a “calm” communicator at center. Relates to every player in the locker room and NFL scouts and coaches give him strong character reviews.”

It sounds like a lot of fans are going to get what they want. It appears the Seahawks are going to make a point of drafting a center for the long term, sorting out the position once and for all.

Per Tony Pauline, Steve Hutchinson, now working for the Seahawks, met with Joe Tippmann earlier this week. The Seahawks sent Hutchinson to work out Schmitz too.

Seattle will also look to trade down from 20 with the hope Tippmann or Schmitz are available later.

I'd love to see Seattle trade back from 20 before they select a center. Pick #20 just feels to high. There's a lot of players I like from 25-45!

Ok Brock Huard!

A high profile young center for a young signal caller would do wonders for his development. I like the fact that Hutchinson is back working with the Seahawks. Let the healing process begin ✨️ 🙌

Tony Pauline is about the least reliable of all the bullshit chuckers out there called journalists. He hasn't been right about anything in 5 years.

That said, I DO believe they are looking at JMS and Tippmann, and well they should. I see no reason to take one at 20, though. They also have two second rounders, and one or both will still be there at 37, as will Avila or Wypler, all very viable options. Now if they trade around and end up at 28 or so, then sure, it's plausible if they really want a guy.

Actually, this is exactly what I hope they do. I've been watching JMS and he looks really good. I haven't seen Tippmann much at all, but I'll take their word for it if he's the choice.

I'm still on board with three D Players for our first four picks and one O-Lineman, either center or guard.

All my mocks have Seattle trading #20 unless they trade down or out from #5.

Tippman is quick for his size and would be a total plow if they want to zone block with him.

BULLSHIT!!!!! I love Pauline. This is the most bullshit statement you have ever posted. I use Pauline every year as a guide line for my mock's. He's been more right than most national pundits before they are even up to snuff. Since I've been comparing mock's with Tony's he's been on the nose more often than not

I'm all in favor of Tippman or Michael Schmitz. That being said, if we miss out on either, Luke Wypler is right there around pick 83. According to Pauline the Seahawks became enamored with Michael Scmitz at the Senior Bowl. So there are some legs to this. I just don't want to miss out on Ade Ade, McDonald, or K. White.

On the nose, huh?

OK, in 2022, he mocked the Seahawks taking:
Rd 1a: Trevor Penning
Rd 1b: Desmond Ridder
Rd 2: Breece Hall
Rd 3: Sam Williams

In 2021, he mocked the Seahawks taking:
Rd 2: Jayson Oweh

In 2020:
Rd 1: Julian Okwara
Rd 2: Tega Wanogho

Couldn't find his 2019 mock, but I'm 100% sure he didn't hit on LJ Collier.

So if by "on the nose" and "more often than not" you mean NEVER EVER NOT EVEN ONCE right, then sure.

I'm talking about his rankings being the same as mine. I don't compare his Seahawks selections. I look at his big board and who he's got ranked in what in what round. And more often than not, his are very close to what I have. And he's usually the first to report it before other pundits have. He's already been all over the Center topic and the Seahawks. The information that he provides is valuable. It's not garbage.
