It's made necessary (or at least relevant) because of the uncertainty about what defensive formation is going to be run. Players like Taylor are OLBs in the 3-4 and DEs in the 4-3.auroraave wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 2:23 pmEdge is not a separate position group. It's all defensive line. If you are doing that, then you need to separate inside v outside linebacker groups and corner v safety group and guard v tackle groups. Why make the distinction for the defensive line? That's being inconsistant.

EDGE is actually OLB in a 3-4. It's pretty confusing when you try to pigeon hole things any more. For instance, Taylor was a DE in 2021, LB in 2022. Nwosu was a pass rushing OLB, but is probably listed as EDGE now. D. Jones is a DT, but really is a DE most of the time. The whole thing is designed for flexibility, so it's really hard to lump them together by position group.auroraave wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 2:23 pmEdge is not a separate position group. Exactly and I just saw something which insinuated they were sticking with 3-4 so not a done deal in the least.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 3:08 pmIt's made necessary (or at least relevant) because of the uncertainty about what defensive formation is going to be run. Re: Rate the position groups
Fair enough. I look at the defense as three levels - line, LB and secondary. There can be flexibility, but you have to fall into one of those position groups. I will be very surprised is this defense is running a 3-4 - that is putting too much pressure on the teams weakest room - the LB's. I think they have to run a hybrid of a 4-3-4 or a 4-2-5 using Jamal Adams around the LOS a lot more. Off ball LB is a very weak position group for seattle. I do think the d line room is going to surprise some people. Tons of depth, youth and speed. They need a run stuffer for sure, but hopefully depth will win out over the course of the season and the inevitable injury attrition. They just need to be average to slightly above average for the d to be better. This defense should be very fast to the ball.SeattleAddict wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 3:12 pmEDGE is actually OLB in a 3-4. It's pretty confusing when you try to pigeon hole things any more. I think we are going to be good this year and will win the NFC West.
Don't cost nuthin' to be optimistic.*
* Well, except for the 150 bucks I'm going to kiss off on them at the Sportsbook whenever I stumble into a casino this month.

Re: Rate the position groups
They ran a 3-4 last season with horrid LBs. I hope the switch back to 4-3. Even a slightly Below average D would be an improvement over last season's rotten Swiss cheese run D.auroraave wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 3:49 pmFair enough. Re: Rate the position groups
I don't think you'll be able to tell if they're running 3-4 or 4-3. They have SO many guys that are DE/OLB hybrids, and play interchangeably standing or hand down it will change every play. I think you'll see a lot of 3-3-5 too. What do you call it when Adams is out there but effectively playing OLB? Or when Taylor/Mafe/Nwosu/Hall/Morris/Smith are out there in some combination?
oh, my ratings, just guessing on how the rookies will do:
QB: 8
RB: 8.5
WR: 9
TE: 6
OL: 5
DL: 4
Edge: 6
LB: 6
DB: 10
ST: 8
I don't know how you can not give DBs a 10. They have pro bowlers at FS and SS, added a safety that probably should have been a pro bowler, a pro bowler at CB and the #5 overall pick coming in. If Witherspoon and Love just live up to expectations, you have 5 pro bowl quality players in a 4-person group. How much more you could ask for??
