Incredible exciting stuff regarding the M's plans for the trade deadline!!!!
“We’ll see what happens over the course of the next two weeks,” Dipoto said. “That may change our position in the standings, but we’ve done a nice job of making ourselves relevant in the playoff race in the second half after we made it challenging on ourselves through a lot of April and into early May. We’ve generally played better over the course of the last few weeks and very well the last 10 games. (I’m) very excited to see where it goes. Maybe that was a turning point for our club and we can start doing the things that we’ve always been capable of doing.”
So don't add now and improve you chances to be in a better position at the deadline. Just do nothing and hope for the best.

“We’re still waiting to see where we end up in this thing,” Dipoto said on his weekly radio show on Seattle Sports 710. “Our plan, at least the way it has been for years, has always been to find ways to get better. We tend to think longer term than short term. Even the Luis Castillo acquisition at the trade deadline last year, we weren’t looking at it as this is the boost that gets us to the postseason. It was the boost that brings an ace to town and we’re going see if we can lock him up for a while. We’ll continue to look at the market, likely more players that have a chance to move forward with us then what you would call short term or rental types.”
So this season doesn't matter. It is all about the future even though you just rented two dogshit players in Wong and Pollock for one season. No urgency given his 20 year contract....

The Nationals, Rockies, Pirates and Cubs will likely sell off certain players and the White Sox should consider moving a few players as well. Most of the players that those teams are looking to move don’t necessarily fit the Mariners’ profile of being more than a short-term rental.
Sources indicate the Mariners won’t be too aggressive in adding a starting pitcher, despite wanting to control the overall innings pitched for rookies Bryce Miller and Bryan Woo.
Yeah we have 3 starters injured and one that will likely be shut down for no reason but yeah no need to add a starter so roll with the AAAA slop waiting in the wings with mid 80s fastballs.
Seattle also might not have the prospect capital to acquire major players with multiple years of club control after big trades the past few seasons, including giving up four players for Castillo.
Wait I though Jerry had built a great farm system. We can't trade any of our top 100 guys? Is that illegal now or something.

Sure, this is just one person’s speculation. And maybe it’s all just wishful thinking. But I would at least agree with the sentiment that minimal a Seattle is on his shortlist.

You can take these thoughts for what they're worth but this is my outlook on Ohtani:
1. He had Seattle as runner-up team/location in first go round
2. He wants to win long term, will pick city he loves but also franchise in best position to win long term (i.e. aging teams, poor salary position will be passed over)
3. He wants a new locale, LA and CA in general both out
4. As I don't know all the franchises that will be involved in this, I would expect the frontrunners to be SEA, CHC, TOR and PHI

dt, Idk why you think Dipoto is going to change his stripes. You keep agonizing over his latest comments which are just an update on his past comments. He cares about the future. And I don't understand why fans can't get it thru their thick heads that the 2023 team -- clearly as Julio is struggling as a sophomore and Kelenic has gone from a total write-off (to most everyone entering season) to inconsistent and France has fallen off -- is not ready to compete for a WS. Playoffs yes, WS no.

Stop with the unrealistic expectations. We have our core. Dipoto is going to wait until that core is ready to be the aircraft carrier.

Well said. I agree.

Add this to the anecdotes category, but apparently Ohtani spent parts of the last two off-seasons in Seattle.
