Re: OFFICIAL: 2023-2024 Offseason & Free Agency Thread
Jorge Soler just hit the open market. We do need a right fielder. 128 OPS+ yes please!!
Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has expressed interest in bringing Tom Murphy back. As for Teo Hernández, the team is expected to extend the qualifying offer, which will be a one-year salary amounting to the average of the top 125 salaries from the 2023 season (just over $20 million this year). Teams have until 2 p.m. Monday to decide whether or not to extend offers to qualifying players, while players have until Nov. 14 to decide whether to accept.

I like the bit about going after Murphy.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Fri Nov 03, 2023 1:23 amJorge Soler just hot the open market. We do need a right fielder. 128 OPS+ yes please!!

I guess I like the bit about the Q.O. to Teo.
But on the Jorge Soler thing. He is one of the most volatile players in MLB.
2019 162 games of 137 OPS+ and even had some MVP votes.
2017 35 OPS+
2014 146 OPS+
2021 in 94 games in KC he had a 78 OPS+ ==> traded to Atl. 131 OPS+ for the rest of the year.
Jorge is a year older than Teo and his Defense makes Teo look like a gold glover if that is even possible. Soler in 10 seasons (502 games) has put up a -55 runs above average in the OF vs. Teo in 8 (But 734 games) years -23. At this point Soler is pretty much a DH mainly guy. And in 8 years Jorge has put up 5.9 WAR
If Jorge is your 2nd or 3rd best pick-up on offense I am fine with it.

They are going to need to acquire more than just Teo's replacement. So yes 2 or 3 bats of that magnitude are definitely required. I wouldn't even mind it if they wound up bringing Teo back, but I wouldn't want him, Geno, AND Raleigh all in the same lineup. Too many strikeouts. There needs to be thunder yes. And with Thunder comes strikeouts. But we need contact hitting to help balance out the lineup. And for the love of God, somebody that can drop down a bunt when needed.Pharmabro wrote: ↑Fri Nov 03, 2023 4:00 amI like the bit about going after Murphy.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Fri Nov 03, 2023 1:23 amJorge Soler just hot the open market. That's why I think Candelario would be a good replacement at third. Yes you'll lose Gold Glove defense, but Candelario is more versatile and has better contact rates. Candelario had a higher OPS+ 119 to Geno's 101, and about 100 fewer K's.

Mariner Fits. A guy from Korea with a mid 800s OPS, a 30 yo Japanese reliever, Teo Fucking Hernandez and a guy that missed ALL of 2023 with injury. They know Jerry too well. Just kill me.

14) Jung Hoo Lee, CF (age: 25)
Lee is expected to be posted by the Kiwoom Heroes in the KBO League, even after ankle surgery ended his season in August. Lee, the 2022 KBO League MVP who hit .429 for Team Korea in the World Baseball Classic, has a career .340/.407/.491 slash line in seven seasons in Korea and is considered to be an above-average defender in center field.
Potential fits: Giants, Mariners, Yankees
16) Shōta Imanaga, LHP (age: 30)
Imanaga started the gold medal game for Team Japan in this year’s World Baseball Classic, kicking off a year that saw him go 7-5 with a 2.66 ERA for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars. He has been one of the best pitchers in Japan since he broke into the Central League in 2016, posting more than a strikeout per inning throughout his career. He is expected to be posted by Yokohama this offseason and should have multiple suitors.
Potential fits: Dodgers, Giants, Mariners
17) Teoscar Hernández, OF (age: 31)
Hernández got off to a sluggish start in his first season with the Mariners, but he turned things around in June, posting solid numbers -- 26 home runs and 93 RBIs over 160 games. He has hit at least 25 home runs in each of his past four full seasons and carries a career OPS of .802. Hernández has a strong arm but is considered to be a below-average fielder, with some viewing him as a future DH by his mid-30s.
Potential fits: Brewers, Mariners, Mets
18) Rhys Hoskins, 1B (age: 31)
A torn left ACL kept Hoskins out for all of 2023, but the 30-year-old has been a steady power source since breaking into the league in 2017. Hoskins has hit at least 27 home runs in each of his four full seasons, so as long as his knee isn’t an issue, he should be among the top power bats available this offseason.
Potential fits: Brewers, Mariners, Padres

In the other hand, we are apparently "in on the Ohtani sweepstakes".

I was also in on the recent $1.3B Powerball sweepstakes last week because I bought a $2 ticket.

This is where we have a significant advantage over the Dodgers and Giants:

Funny that nobody ever talks about this...
A contract with the M's at the same price point is worth considerably more than it is with many other teams.
But it's always, "the travel sucks!!! the stadium sucks!!! it rains!!!"

Soler is fine, but not as the stand alone big addition.
His inconsistency scares me. Seems like a player that could come to Seattle and just bomb.
