Lot of interesting issues with Alek Manoah, he seems to have been fighting with the Jay's over conditioning issues, refused a minor league assignment. He is also one of the slowest workers in baseball, the pitch clock could have affected him. Figure he's probably like a tightly wound type. If the mariners felt they could get along with him
Thanks. I knew he sucked in 2023 but didn't know why.

Bellinger went from 8.6 WAR as a 23 yo to -1.7 as a 25 yo in 2021.

Alek went from 6.0 to -1.1 in ONE season. Feels even weirder for a pitcher because hitters seem more susceptible to slumps than pitchers.

There could have been some health issues, the thing really doesn't seem clear, it doesn't sound like it was handled very well. It's also not clear if he's truly available. It be selling low.
Manoah’s hellish year included a month-long stint in the Florida Complex League to try and solve his sudden mechanical issues, as well as a later option to Triple-A Buffalo in August that didn’t result in any actual pitching appearances with the Bisons.
Seems they sent him down but he refused to pitch. I think that's pretty funny actually, warming to the guy

It's a risk. He went from Cy Young numbers to being demoted to AAA in a single season. An absolute implosion.

The way I see it is we have tried the JK experiment. We have done everything we could reasonably do, and the fact is JK is not playing to his potential. At this point, he is a known commodity. I don't think trotting him out there for another year is going to change anything. He'll be streaky. He'll swing at stuff way outside the strike zone. He'll throw pissy temper tantrums and kick Gatorade coolers. He'll put up 2.0 WAR and be right around 100 OPS+

In other words, we know what we're going to get with JK. Nothing will likely change next year.

But Manoah - he could potentially bounce back and become a TOR guy, eat 190 innings, strike out 180 batters, and give you a 2.80 ERA

He has the potential to be the bounce back payer of the year next year. Who knows what was going on - it doesn't seem physical, so it must have been mental.

I don't think the M's do a good job developing hitters, but we do a pretty good job with our pitchers. So there's a lot of potential here that our pitching staff can work with. So I say get rid of a guy who is league average for a guy who could potentially be lights out again.

FanGraphs columnist Leo Morgenstern offers his take on Luis Urias:

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/mariners-sc ... esh-start/
The Mariners are taking on the uncertainty in this trade, but ultimately, it’s the Red Sox who are taking a bigger risk. Boston, a team with no clear answer at second base, gave up a young, cost-controlled infielder who was a two-plus win player as recently as 2022. If Urías bounces back with the Mariners, Breslow could end up looking foolish in his very first trade as CBO.

Agree that it is even dumber to trade Urias with no clear answer at 2B than it is to trade for him as your 6th option at 2B.
