In a discussion about Shohei Ohtani's destination, MLB Network commentator Bob Nightengale suggested Ohtani would choose the Angels over the Mariners because Ohtani wants a winner and the Halos have won more than the Mariners have.

Jerry Dipoto resigned from the Angels in July 2015 and joined the Mariners after that season. Since that time the Mariners have MLB's 11th-best regular-season record at 616-578 (.516) while the Angels have the 22nd-best record at 555-639 (.465).
Despite having two generational players in Mike Trout and Ohtani, the Angels hold MLB's longest current streak of consecutive losing seasons at eight. The Halos assumed that dubious honor two years ago and have added on with another pair of losing campaigns.
The Angels' last winning season started with Dipoto at the helm in the front office.
Ohtani is unlikely to land in Seattle but it won't be because Mariners have a lesser chance of winning than the Angels.

They don't call him Boob for nothing but I think he was referring to the past two decades. Ohtani has a better chance to be the next POTUS than being a Mariner or Angel so I don't know why people are making such a big deal about it.harmony wrote: ↑Tue Dec 05, 2023 9:52 pmIn a discussion about Shohei Ohtani's destination, MLB Network commentator Bob Nightengale suggested Ohtani would choose the Angels over the Mariners because Ohtani wants a winner and the Halos have won more than the Mariners have.

Well, when Shohei Ohtani was eight years old the Angels did win a World Series (while Ichiro and Kaz Sasaki were All Stars for the Mariners).D-train wrote: ↑Tue Dec 05, 2023 10:03 pmThey don't call him Boob for nothing but I think he was referring to the past two decades. The Angels have not won a postseason game since 2009, being swept in 2014 in their only playoff appearance since.

I prefer to call him the "lactation unit" like the one I saw at the Chicago airport today.

So Dipoto could have traded Marco and gotten a useless minor leaguer back.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 3:36 amhttps://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/ ... zales.html
Well Marco wasn't a Brave for very long!
Which means he had to attach Kelenic and $4.5M to Evan White to dump him off.
If White was owed $7M + $2M buyout, that means they sold Kelenic for $4.5M in savings plus the two pitchers?

Evan White has a guaranteed $17 million remaining on his contract ($7 million in 2024, $8 million in 2025 and a $2 million buyout of 2026 option).bpj wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 4:23 amSo Dipoto could have traded Marco and gotten a useless minor leaguer back.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 3:36 amhttps://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/ ... zales.html

If the $4.5 million the Mariners sent the Braves counts against Marco Gonzales' salary, the lefthander's 2024 salary would be $7.75 million. Pittsburgh's obligation to Gonzales should be reduced by the money the Braves reportedly are sending the Pirates in the deal.
Therefore, the Pirates hypothetically could have traded a player to be named to the Mariners for Gonzales and more than $4.5 million. Jerry Dipoto likely had discussions with Pittsburgh but preferred the Atlanta deal to dump Evan White's contract.
Under his contract, Gonzales is entitled to a $250,000 assignment bonus in a trade. Gonzales likely has collected a cool half-million in bonuses since Sunday evening.
