Only way they do that is trade Castillo first as you mentioned.harmony wrote: ↑Fri Dec 15, 2023 4:10 pmIf the Mariners signed Blake Snell today, the M's would have three starters with nine-figure contracts.harmony wrote: ↑Fri Dec 15, 2023 3:18 pmA trade of Luis Castillo for an impact bat could free up payroll to sign Blake Snell (or another free agent starter).Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Dec 15, 2023 3:12 pmYoung and controllable, first time I think I've seen Castillo's name mentioned
Castillo has a no-trade clause in his contract.
One could argue that's not wise distribution of financial resources.

If RR has a miracle recovery and is already rehabbing in Tacoma by the trade deadline then we can obviously trade a starter with skipping a beat.

I can't decide if this is hyperbole, or if it is seriously suggesting we rob Peter to pay Paul, or if it suggests we are penny wise and pound poor.harmony wrote: ↑Fri Dec 15, 2023 5:05 pmMariners After Midnight columnist Jason Churchill suggests trading Josh Rojas, Dylan Moore and Ty France to clear payroll space:

Either way, this all seems moot since the M's appear to be standing pat. They haven't signed a FA, and meanwhile teams that appeared to need starting pitching a couple of months ago are starting to sign or trade for them - which means there is less demand for the one trade chip we have to offer.
Boggles the mind. Surely there is some huge trademark Jerry deal pending...

The successful bidder tends to pay a premium early in an auction.Big_Maple wrote: ↑Fri Dec 15, 2023 5:11 pmI can't decide if this is hyperbole, or if it is seriously suggesting we rob Peter to pay Paul, or if it suggests we are penny wise and pound poor.harmony wrote: ↑Fri Dec 15, 2023 5:05 pmMariners After Midnight columnist Jason Churchill suggests trading Josh Rojas, Dylan Moore and Ty France to clear payroll space:

Better bargains tend to come later in the auction but some hopeful bidders walk away with nothing.
Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League thread!
Can't even believe we are talking about trading away $3 million guys to save money. If they were to do it, it better AFTER they acquire their replacements.

When other clubs have some leverage knowing the team needs to cut payroll?
Deals probably are not made independently of each other. A move is likely made with the complementary transaction lined up.
Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League thread!
We have zero leverage NOW because we have multiple massive holes in the lineup. Who cares if we get a C- or a D+ prospect for Moore or Rojas.
