The one remaining type of move that would make sense to me at this point would be flipping DeSclafini for a guy like Brandon Lowe. Include $6M to the Rays and it would only raise our payroll around $3M (and lower theirs 3).
This makes total sense to me. I never understood why the M's traded for him in the first place. It seems like they got rid of a relatively bloated contract for a relatively unproductive player when they offloaded Marco, and then they took on DeSclafani. He's owed $12M next year, and in 2022 he had a 5.75 ERA. Yeah, he provides bullpen depth, but we've got guys like Hancock waiting in the wings.

They need to do what Atlanta did - take on Marco to get their Kelenic, and then turn around and flip Marco to someone who could really use him. I'd love to get Lowe, but he's got 2 years left at about $11M per year. So if the Rays traded a productive 2B in Lowe for a risky BOR pitcher like DeSclafani, they would only save about $11M and have one less year of control.

Funny, I googled this and found an interesting piece by a Twins fan that suggests DeSclafani would be a good fit. They don't offer a trade proposal, but maybe someone like Kyle Farmer who's been a pretty good IF utility guy:

Farmer is just an older Moore. I don't get the point.

Or a bullpen piece.

Or a prospect.

Point is, I don't see the point of DeScalfani. He's an expensive, one year, bottom feeding starter or long relief bullpen arm that we don't really need. We got rid of Marco who filled that role, and then took on the salary relief throw-in from the Giants.

I'd prefer to do what the Braves did and flip him for something we could use, and/or is cheaper.

I'm not wed to the Farmer idea. But DeScalfani isn't going to bring a prospect haul.

We absolutely need ADS. We have 5 starters and Hancock. Not enough SP depth. That is why they got him.

Trade with the Cubs for Merryweather. The Cubs signed Imanaga which means they're likely going to a 6 man rotation, or a 5 man with spot starts from a 6th swingman.

DeSclafani can be their 6th starter, over someone like Smyly. Get Merryweather and split the differences between the total salaries (around $3M so $1.5M). The cubs get slightly younger.

The M's have no lefty starters. Smyly can provide a left handed long reliever in the Mariners' pen.
