It was to offload Ray. They wanted Mitch and the salary7 gone from Ray and the Giants missed out on other big name players consider it an early buy on 2025.Big_Maple wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2024 2:44 pmThis makes total sense to me. I never understood why the M's traded for him in the first place. It seems like they got rid of a relatively bloated contract for a relatively unproductive player when they offloaded Marco, and then they took on DeSclafani. He's owed $12M next year, and in 2022 he had a 5.75 ERA. Yeah, he provides bullpen depth, but we've got guys like Hancock waiting in the wings.
They need to do what Atlanta did - take on Marco to get their Kelenic, and then turn around and flip Marco to someone who could really use him. I'd love to get Lowe, but he's got 2 years left at about $11M per year. So if the Rays traded a productive 2B in Lowe for a risky BOR pitcher like DeSclafani, they would only save about $11M and have one less year of control.
Funny, I googled this and found an interesting piece by a Twins fan that suggests DeSclafani would be a good fit. They don't offer a trade proposal, but maybe someone like Kyle Farmer who's been a pretty good IF utility guy:

Yep, the irony is ADS will put up more WAR in 2024 and might even in 2025-26 as well.Pharmabro wrote: ↑Sat Jan 13, 2024 12:23 amIt was to offload Ray. If you exclude Ray's Cy Young season he has put up 4.5 WAR in 5 seasons since 2018. Less than 1 WAR a season and that was his prime.
How productive will he be his age 33 & 34 seasons after TJ surgery?? Really idiotic trade by the Giants imo.

Wander isn’t coming back if you read, based on what he has been charged with down there he won’t get through with a visabpj wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2024 11:05 amThe one remaining type of move that would make sense to me at this point would be flipping DeSclafini for a guy like Brandon Lowe. Include $6M to the Rays and it would only raise our payroll around $3M (and lower theirs 3).
If Wander Franco is coming back, they probably realize they could save some money by playing Caballero at 2B. They seem pretty weak at SP.
Or, could make sense to flip him to any number of other teams that need SP. Makes a lot less sense to let him Marco it in the bullpen imo.

Ahh good, given his apparent issue it doesn't sound like we want him around our teens anyways..desbcoach wrote: ↑Sat Jan 13, 2024 3:16 amWander isn’t coming back if you read, based on what he has been charged with down there he won’t get through with a visabpj wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2024 11:05 amThe one remaining type of move that would make sense to me at this point would be flipping DeSclafini for a guy like Brandon Lowe. About DeScalfini being depth, I didn't feel exposed after Marco was traded.
If they felt they needed depth, they didn't have to go out of their way to give Kelenic away to unload Marco's $12M.
DeSclafini seemed to be more about balancing salary in the Ray trade than adding depth, but I guess we'll see if they keep him around as the #6.
I don't think they'll want to be on the hook for $12M to Desclafini any more than they want to pay up for Snell over Woo.
Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League thread!
I kinda just want them to throw him out there for 2 months and see if he figures it out
