Five worst 10-pass debuts in Seahawk history
And yep, I went year-by-year through pro football reference. It didn't take as long as one would think, the Russell Wilson years were especially a breeze. Anyway, here they are:
5. Charlie "Clipboard Jesus" Whitehurst, 11/7/2010. 12-23 for 112 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, no sacks in a start against the Giants. Hawks lost 41-7.
4. Gino Torretta, 12/22/1996. 5-16 for 41 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 3 sacks in a start against the Raiders. Despite being outgained 356-129 the Hawks actually won 28-21 in the second and final game of Toretta's.career.
3. Stan Gelbaugh, 10/11/92. 3/10 for 33 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 3 sacks in a 27-0 loss to the Cowboys while splitting time with Dan McGwire. Speaking of whom...
2. Dan McGwire, 10/4/92. 12-21 for 70 yards, 0 TDs, 3 INTs, 3 sacks in a start against the Chargers. Hawks lost 17-6.
1. Sam Howell, last night. 5-14 for 24 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 4 sacks. McGwire's stat line might look worse but he (along with Gelbaugh) was running literally the worst offense in the history of the NFL so Howell gets the top (or I guess the bottom) spot.
I only caught the latter part of the game, but I was stunned at how bad Howell was. Even when he had time he couldn't do anything. In garbage time. Dude threw for 4K for a shitty Redskin offense but with us was even worse than Dan McGwire.

I'm torn on if I want to see Geno or Sam next week.
I think the team has a better shot with Geno, but that doesn't mean they will win.
If they are going to lose anyway, it might be more interesting to see Sam.

How difficult must it be to not play, and then get thrown into the heat of the game with your team behind? Either the Pack's d-line started playing harder after Howell went in, or SEA's offensive line stopped playing, but I saw a guy who took the snap and had no time to even plant and look for a man. Sure, he's rusty, but no protection.
And the coaching was essentially abysmal. Even Macdonald admitted that.
"It stings," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said after his team's four-game winning streak came to an end. "Just in general you got to give Green Bay a lot of credit. I thought they out-coached us. We didn't have a good enough plan in all three phases. I'm responsible for that, and frankly we didn't play good enough. Didn't do the things we been doing that have won us games. We didn't do those things."

Crazy how much football he has played and he looked terrified or massively unprepared to play. Just looked timid and scared.

As we said a few weeks ago - it would be good to see Sam play a full game - give him all the first team reps this week and let him get ready for the game - hold Geno out and see how he does. If he sucks again then we know we need to dump both and get a whole new QB combo next year.

Of course it's difficult, but this has happened over a thousand times in NFL history and about 97-98% of the time the backup QB hasn't been this bad.douche wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2024 10:43 pmHow difficult must it be to not play, and then get thrown into the heat of the game with your team behind? I do think that given the chance to start against the Viqueens he can play at least as well as he did last year. If he has any testicular fortitude, he's going to be pissed off and will himself and the team to win next week. If he sucks again, we need to draft a QB. Period.Lamda wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2024 12:07 amAs we said a few weeks ago - it would be good to see Sam play a full game - give him all the first team reps this week and let him get ready for the game - hold Geno out and see how he does. I want to see a QB that runs the ball, both on purpose and in the moment. If Sam came out and did that and wasDavidGee24 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2024 12:29 amI do think that given the chance to start against the Viqueens he can play at least as well as he did last year. decent through the air with a minimum of picks and sacks, he could win the job. he won't though.

I think it's very easy to sit in the armchair at home and critique a player. Howell was put into a no-win situation. The coaching was weak, the scheme was weak, but... 'Hey Howell, get in there and git 'er done!' It's not as if the team was up a TD, Geno gets injured and Howell goes in to hand off the ball for the remainder of the game (although maybe he should have).
Even the really good QBs need time to scan the field. Again, better scheme. Or better players. Starting with QB protection.
Some people are intrigued with Howell's numbers with NY in 2023. Well... different team, different coaches, different environment, different scheme... plus he was the starter, so his mindset was different. I'm not defending Howell because let's face it, the Giants were 4-13 that season where Howell threw as many INTs as he did TDs. But to put a guy in cold in a game that you're losing and expecting him to play at a high level against a good team with no protection is delusional. These things need to be put into perspective.
It just illustrates how much further this team needs to improve in terms of personnel and coaching.

Re: Five worst 10-pass debuts in Seahawk history
Again...this was the worst EVER, in 48 years of Seahawk football. By an established NFL QB. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything you said (especially the armchair QB part).douche wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2024 2:26 pmI think it's very easy to sit in the armchair at home and critique a player.
